Dy Joel Engelhardt 'aim Beach Post Staff Writer WEST PALM BEACH The historic church at the center of CityPlace, known for its superb acoustics, won't be an 800-seat concert hall as once promised. Instead, the church will be transformed into a multipurpose exhibition hall with movable seats and a portable stage that could host anything from a school concert to a wedding reception. It's hardly what city commissioners envisioned when they heard CityPlace officials praise the "fabulous" acoustics of the 1926 church and promise to turn it into a major cultural draw.

And it dovetails with several other failed efforts at bringing culture to CityPlace's stores, restaurants and cinema. Gone from original plans for the $550 million project are an opera house, which will instead be built nearby; a children's museum; and a home for the Florida Stage theater group. But don't say CityPlace and the old church won't have culture, Chief Operating Officer Bruce Macleod said. CityPlace in general is surrounded by cultural offerings: the Kravis Center, a fine arts high school, Ballet Florida, the Norton Museum and the proposed $50 million opera house. And cultural offerings will be welcome at the old church, which CityPlace will run through a nonprofit corporation, he said.

While the church at the center of a plaza surrounded by national retailers and restaurants scheduled to open in October will have commercial uses such as banquets, it also will be open for ballet, art exhibits, musical performances, lectures and theater, Macleod said. That's not what the developers and city officials once promised, said Will Ray, president of the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. He lamented the tradeoff of the building's acoustic integrity for marketability. "I know the building has been ruined for its highest and best historic purpose: a live-music and spoken-word room for the people of Palm Beach County," Ray said. "They didn't tear the building down.

They tore it up." CityPlace officials said they will have spent $5 million to painstakingly restore an aged building worn down by a leaking roof and rotting wood. The biggest change called for them to tear up the hall's sloping wooden floor and replace it with a flat, concrete slab. That opens up the space below so that it can be filled with stores and restaurants, which will poke out in three directions from the church's lower level. It had to be concrete to meet fire-safety codes. Other elements of the old building will remain or be meticulously replaced, said the architect overseeing the restoration, Rick Gonzalez.

For instance, workers made molds from the plaster ceiling and will use them when they pour new plaster. And pecky cypress ceiling beams and wooden grillwork were restored. "We're doing the least amount of damage possible," Gonzalez said. But that doesn't satisfy Ray, who envisioned it as a classic concert hall nearly a decade ago when the city began to buy the land that would become City-Place. Ray, a supporter of former Mayor Nancy Graham, said he pleaded with her to protect the church.

Even after the Palm Beach Opera decided the church could not be converted to an opera house, Graham supported the building's preservation. CityPlace developers, meanwhile, made the church a central part of their pitch during the competition among developers for the project. "It really becomes the heart of this area," CityPlace architect Howard Elkus told a city committee in 1996. He called the acoustics "fabulous" and said the developers planned to convert it to a performing arts facility. But the developers never really had a clear vision for the church.

Without a specific tenant, they decided to create a flexible space that could be adapted for a variety of activities, Macleod said. Still, the church remains a vital part of CityPlace, Macleod said. "I see it as a facility that will be used to draw people to City-Place," Macleod said. joelengelhardtpbpost.com grandchildren; and a brother. Services 1 p.m.
