OCTOBER 10. 1 BBS lac AC AN FORD MAZDA TOYOTA Texas' oldest newspaper .25 Daily, .75 Sunday Causeway toll at flaW A 7 By PANDORA RYAN News Staff Writer GALVESTON Seven people remained hospitalized Saturday with injuries suffered in an accident that killed two persons when a car forced a school bus off the causeway late Friday. Ball High students and chaperones were returning from a football victory in League City Friday when a black Pontiac Trans Am sideswiped their bus, sending it through the causeway railing and onto northbound lanes 20 feet below Witnesses said the car, traveling in excess of 75 mph, slid under the bus, shearing off the car's top, then fell more than 60 feet into Galveston Bay. Coast Guard rescue teams pulled the vehicle from the water three hours later and the driver 25-year-old Elvis Montemayor of 1405 Marine Dr. in Galveston, was pronounced dead.

One student, 14-year-old Condition of Injured persons reported, Page 2A. Josephine Temple, also was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining 40 passengers were treated at local hospitals; 36 were transported directly to John Sealy's emergency room in Galveston. Galveston Police Capt. Leon Lewis, who was sitting on the front seat of the bus, had just radioed for a police escort into the city when the accident occurred around 11 p.m.

"1 heard a screeching of brakes and then there was a crash," Lewis said Saturday. "The bus started to fishtail, and I jumped up and went toward the driver (54-year-old Marlene Canton! because I could see she was losing control of the bus." Lewis said the bus was approaching the railing head-on as he attempted to gain control of the bus. "We hit the rail and the bus jumped up and went into orbit. It seemed like an eternity in slow motion that we were just suspended in the air." He said the bus then sailed 15 feet over the water between the sections of the causeway before nose-diving onto the concrete of the northbound lanes. According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Tom McCoy, the guardrail's impact separated the bus body from its frame, sending it into the air and over the water.

He said the "spring action" of the separation prevented more damage to the bus. Lewis and booster club member Eugene Scott crawied over the pinned bus driver through the torn-open cab of the bus. Emergency Room Director Dr. Michael Warren said the 36 victims who arrived at the hospital's doors shortly after midnight constituted the largest single group ever treated there.

More than a dozen surgeons were called to reinforce the facility's usual staff of six, and twice that many arrived voluntarily, he said. "This was a true test of our capabilities in an emergency situation," Warren said. "You never know if you're prepared for something like this, but the entire staff was magnificent a truly remarkable group." Warren said emergency room administrators identified "the patients as quickly as possible, then notified the anxious parents in the outer waiting room. "You would expect a great deal of emotion, panic and moaning and groaning," he said of the young patients, "but we didn't have any of that. The students were absolutely wonderful the way they handled it all." By early Saturday morning, John Sealy physicians had treated and released more than 30 people; seven were admitted with more extensive injuries.

Warren said the community support witnessed by the hospital surpassed any he had ever seen. Firefighters, nurses and citizens bombarded the hospital with offers of help, and Galveston's McDonald's came with food and coffee for everyone.
