D4-Palm Beach Post-Times, Saturday, January 1, 1977 ,4P mwwsm,. m urn - Ft mm - fTio Says Ony Eskimos Can Paddle a Kayak? f zrn- Peggy Gossett : mi W Vtk i-1"! The warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean off West Palm Beach are strewn more with hobie cats than kayaks, but the vessel that was perfected by the Eskimos is nonetheless paddled and raced in Florida seas. This and other aquatic knowledge was passed about at the Women's National Aquatic Forum held this week at the Howard Park pool. Representatives from Colleges, high schools, YMCA's and Red Cross offices all over the country met here in the annual gathering that for the last 11 years had been held in Pom-pano Beach. The forum is held primarily for teachers in all areas of aquatics: competitive swimming, diving, scuba and skin diving, kayaking, boating, synchronized swimming, lifesav-ing and water safety. This year's forum focused on the research aspects of aquatics: materials and theories that instructors everywhere rely upon in the teaching of swimming and lifesaving skills. And those are skills which, if taught incorrectly, may cost a person his life. "We also have discussed methods for contacting the public," said Patricia Gorman, professor at Cuyoho-ga Community College in Cleveland, a forum organizer. The forum is also used to update methods and exchange ideas, she said, and members actively participate in water skills' demonstrations in the pool each day. The forum is informal. Participants do not have to attend the three daily sessions. Some, Gorman said, choose to explore the beaches, play golf or swim laps if that particular day's session did not interest them. Thursday's session, for example, consisted of an afternoon kayak-handling demonstration by Howard Park pool chief of staff Henri Von Zutphen, formerly an international Red Cross instructor and administrator. Von Zutphen, in his liquid, Dutch-accented voice, explained how the kayak was actually easier and more efficient to handle than the canoe. With one quick shift of the two-sided kayak paddle, the kayaker strokes from side to side of the 13-foot long craft. To reverse, or turn around, he halts with one sharp stroke and then paddles on one side. The stroke requires less pressure and is easier to teach and learn than a canoe stroke, Von Zutphen said. Kayaking offers one maneuverability neve possible in a canoe: the 360-degree 'Eskimo roll'. That's where kayak, kayaker and paddle turn completely around under water. "It's utilized as a necessary skill when the kayaker loses his grip a bit and the kayak is thrown off balance, It's easier to follow the capsized kayak all the way through, but it's strange at first because one must get used to being totally immersed under water, upside down and gather his balance back from that position," Von Zutphen said. The kayaker simply rolls with the fast-moving vessel, and is protected from the waist down by a spray cover, rather like the leather cover on a convertible sports car, he said. The kayaker also carries a lifejacket and extra paddle, especially in competition when kayaks reach top speeds and must navigate through race course's slim, steel gates. The other instructional session included a synchronized swimming workshop, snorkle and scuba exhibition, surf and rescue equipment demonstration. Speakers from all over the country addressed the forum on the following topics: water adjustment for parents and infants, the lifesaving carries, boating safety, instruction for fearful adult beginning swimmers and camp waterfront considerations. These experts volunteered their time and attended the forum at their own expenses. The forum concluded yesterday. Next Christmas vacation, the members will traipse back to kayak, swim, scuba and chat in order to update their knowledge. No one will be taxed that much in today's workout, according to coach John Madden. In fact, if anyone breaks a sweat it will be because he wanted to. A short meeting and limbering-up comprises the day's work because Sunday and Monday will be off-days as the team prepares for the trip to Pasadena Monday evening. Madden, for one, is happy with the schedule that leaves Super Bowl teams two weeks to get ready. Coach Bud Grant of the Vikings has said he prefers only a week off between the conference championship and the Super Bowl. "After playing in the conference championship, I think a team needs a few days to settle down before seriously starting to plan for the Super Bowl," said Madden. "It's difficult to get a team up twice like that in such a short space of time. We've spent most of this week, resting and reflecting about our victory last week over Pittsburgh. "Now, we will take Sunday and Monday off, and then we will have the usual allotment of days to get ready for the Vikings. At this stage of the season it's nice to keep on the same sort of schedule you had during the weeks before."
