Pala Bmci Port, Thaw fay. Nov. fj. FX SPEC'S MUSIC PRE CHRISTMAS SALE! Legendary Sandow Ate, ' Drank What He Enjoyed v7f V 4 !" ugh PALM BEACH MALL 1 w - SPECS has the most wanted prestige brands in Instruments and SOUND EQUIPMENT!! . 1 1 ' 'It Is noteworthy that he eats, drinks and smokes about as he pleases, the old-fashioned Idea of dietetic restriction for athletes having very little weight with him. It Is astonishing that he Is not more abstemious, but he is apparently quite as capable of Immense muscular effort after a course dinner and a liberal supply of wine, followed by one or more cigars, as at i anyothertlme." His Interviewer asked Sandow how he would make out in the ring, and Sandow replied that he would not dare strike a man; that he could break a four-inch plank with a blow of his fist. Sandow did not live to extreme old age, despite his splendid condition in his prime. He was two years short of his 60th birthday when he died in 1925. WASHINGTON A fascinating glimpse of an almost legendary figure from grandfather's day Is provided In a recent Issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, which regularly publishes a "75 Years Ago" column. . The re-told is that of Eugene Sandow, better known as "Sandow the Strong Man," before whom ladies of the Gay Nineties swooned and men turned green with envy. He was the first of the modern musclemen. The Prussian-born Sandow would open his strong man act by doing a backflip blindfolded and with his feet tied together while holding 56-pound dumbell in each hand. He would end the performance by supporting a 1-ton load on his arched body with only his hands and feet touching the floor. What sort of man was Sandow, who very possibly was the strongest man who ever lived? According to JAMA's report In September, 1893, he was only 5 feet 8 inches tall, but husky: "he weighs stripped to the buff 186 pounds." The muscleman was 26 years old at the time. Eight years before, so his story went, he was a puny lad antedating by many years Charles Atlas' famed "97-pound weakling." He claimed to have built himself up to Samson-like strength with a home-made system of physical exercise which he offered to share with all at a price, naturally. What seemed to delight JAMA's medical reporter most about Sandow was his system of training, "especially as regards his diet and mode of. life."
