Palm Beach Post-Times, Saturday, January 1, 1977-A7 First Authorized Woman Priest's Ordination Today compromise between their conflicting religions. That was the springboard for her ministry, and now she is thinking about becoming a bishop. "That'd be kind of neat," she said. "I think the House of Bishops, like the priesthood, could benefit from a woman's viewpoint on things ... so maybe someday I'll be a bishop someplace. Don't laugh. People laughed five years ago when I said I wanted to be a priest." Mrs. Means is an easy-going, good-humored woman who can be shockingly frank. She once answered the telephone by saying, "Hi, this is God" and jokingly warned an employe at the Indiana Women's Prison, where she is a chaplain, "You're talking to God's favorite lady now." religion, so they stopped going to church alogether. Seventeen years ago, they decided to go again. "I decided then that we needed to go to church for the kids," she said. "You don't ever think you need it, but your kids need it" They chose St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, near their home on Indianapolis' east side, as a belief in God. You know religion is belief in people. Religion to me is caring about people and belief in other people. "The ministry is an extending of that belief in people helping them to help themselves." The daughter of rlcoholic, non-church-going parents, she quit high school at 16 to elope. Mrs. Means and her Methodist husband, Delton, were unable to accept each other's INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jacqueline Means, a former Roman Catholic who once quit going to church for seven years, will be ordained today as an Episcopalian priest, the first woman to be ordained since the church authorized women priests. She jokingly calls herself "God's favorite lady" and wears a T-shirt with "Mother Means" emblazoned on the back. Mrs. Means has been the target of some opposition from men within the church and a busload of demon- strators is expected at the ordination ceremony at All Saints' Episcopal church. Two women members of the All Saints vestry at the church resigned in protest to her ordination. Becoming a priest was hardly a lifetime goal for Jackie Means, a 40-year-old mother of four who started attending church again only for her children's sake. She doesn't even consider herself a religious person at least not in the traditional sense. "What's a religious person?" she asks rhetorically. "I don't think anybody else knows.
