And please remember that. "I just hate it when anyone says that my career is having a rebirth, revival, comeback or whatever," said Butterfly in that squeaky, childlike voice that is her trademark. "Where do they think I was? Why, I was busy that whole time doing important things." And she patted a battered shopping bag covered with political plugs and filled with campaign literature. "I've been working for my wintry," she said, "and I've been busy lately starting a workshop for children inter-sted in acting. Before that I was in some movies, and I made an appearance on television.' But even the sprightly Butterfly has to admit that she las been getting a lot more jttention since t;iking over a starring role in "Curley McDimplc," a long-run off-Broadway show that spools the film musicals of the OT's. The revival of "Gone With the Wind" also helped rekindle her career by bringing her back to a new generation as the simDerine servant Prissv who nearly caused Melanie to lose her baby. "There are lots of tilings that I'm still planninc." she said. "I feel that I've just be- eun to uncover my talent, and I don't want to reveal every thing too soon or people might get tired ol mc when 1 get old. in Curley Mr-Dimple' I sing and dance, and people said they didn't know 1 could dance. This way I'm iust full of surprises." Although "Gone With the Wind" probably will always remain as Miss McQueen's most memorable role, she viv idly recalls all the other parts with equal pride. "Prissy was supposed to oe 14 years old." she said, "and my age is always to remember because I was exactly twice that age-28-whon I played the part. But before that I'd always acted and been in Broadway plays." Butterfly, who still could play a character half her age despite the added years and extra pounds around her waist, ?ot her big time start in the 1937 musical "Brown Sugar". "I always got good notices even when the shows didn't, "she said. "Being in the theater isn't easv for anyone, black or while but we seem to get by. I have to thank George Abbott for giving me my first chance on Broadway, and that led to my part in 'Gone With the Wind." However,' despite the good reviews as Prissy, Butterfly' had a hard time finding meaty roles. Perhaps her professional career hit bottom when she was called upon in a mov-, ieto utter the line: "Whatdat say who dat when you say dat?" "Of course, Negroes have to wait around for any parts that they are given by the superior race-that s the white race," she said with a laugh. "I'm able to laugh because I'm not bitter about it, but I never thought I'd have to say a thing like that. I imagined that since I was an intelligent woman I could play any kind of role. Even those roles as maids gave out finally, however, and Miss McQueen struggled as a factory worker, waitress and dishwasher. She still spends her spare time at odd jobs, such as selling cosmetics and giving lessons to youngsters in a workshop, when whe isn't at the theater in "Cmlev Mc Dimple" The play was a hit before the producer got the idea of writing in a part for Butterfly, but the idea turned out to be a boon as the publicity caught on. Butterfly acain nlavs a stereotyped maid in the spoof of the IMO's. but she sees the part as a too-true slice of life. "There are nlentv nf Prices- in the world today." said Miss McQueen, who marip a trail. matic rediscovery of the South when she returned home to Tampa, Fla. while unpm. ployed in 1957. "You can see them standme in the doorways down South." With her return to the snuf. light. Butterfly is rontemnlat. inc leaving "Curlev McDim. pie" for "something better."
