WSSS flu! 1 Paha Beach Port, -B13 Than day, Nov. !I,1S 'Dirty Book' Author Enriched THURSDAY. 28th, From 12 HOOl f0 9 Solid state AMFM MOTOROLA STEREO With Stereo FM The Completely new concept in stereo . . . By CHARLES W. BELL ROME (UPI)-It pains Harold Robbins when his books are described as crude. Dirty, maybe, he'll concede, but not crude. "Hell, I know I'm not a literary gent," Robbins said in an Interview here, "but I write my own stuff in my own wav. If I can see It, feel It and smell It, then I can write It." Financially, at least, the formula works. Critics hammer him, but the 51-year-old orphan from the Hell's Kitchen slums of New York seems to know what his readers want and they get It from his golden fingers. His first novel, "Never Love a Stranger," was mauled in the reviews but was an instant best seller. It still is going strong. Paperback sales last year reached 600,000. His latest novel, "The Adventurers" was a whopper even by Robbins standards. More than two million copies of the paperback were sold last year in the United States alone. The film rights went to Paramount for $1 million. There's more to come. "I'm working on a new one," Robbins said, "it'll come out next fall, called "The Inheritors". After that, there's a couple more In the mill and thatll take nie up to 1978." 9 1 CIRCLE OF SOUND j ZENITH STEREO CHECK ih FIELDS LOW LOW DISCOUNT PRICE 40 wattj total instantaneous peak power output Two powerful 8" and two 3'j" speakers for rich sound large storage area for all your precious records Slereo headphone jack, provision for external speakers Common stereo tape Input and output jacks Precision crafted stereo automatic record changer Genuine walnut veneers and select hardwood solids Beautiful Contemporary styled cabinet fits any decor Surrounds you with rich sound 80-watt solid state amplifier Quality twin-cone speakers Automatic 4-speed record changer CHARGE ALL YOUR PURCHASES WITH J.M. Already a millionaire, he happily plays the role of a hardbitten swinger whose own life t mirrors his fictional heroes. . When he showed up at a ; Rome film set to see how ! "The Adventurers" was com- ing along, he announced, "I'm just here to watch them niakethedirtyparts." Hollywood-type dark glasses rested fashionably on the top of his head. Kverything he wore was handmade, even his belt "it cost me 35 bucks" and around his neck was a new trademark. "These are black power beads," Robbins explained. "Nothing political. I just liked them." He's losing a little hair and gaining a little weight, but If Robbins Is bothered, It doesn't show. He did give up cigarettes, ending a habit that, became one of the standard gags of entertainment insiders. They said no screen rough guy mauling a cigar ever matched Robbins chewing on the filler tip cigarettes he once consumed at a two-packa-day rate. "My doctor said It was either cigarettes or sex," Robbins said. "I don't have to smoke." The "Real Robbins" admits he is mellowing. But between the book covers, he still mixes actions, suspense, money and sex especially sex in a blockbusting formula. His writing technique Is simple. He climbs up a ladder into the attic of the villa he owns near Cannes, pulls It up after him and punches away at an electric typewriter for three hours daily. Next to the typewriter rests a set of foreign dictionaries and grammar textbooks. Nothing else. No notebooks. No filing cabinet. "I'm not an Impulse writer, though," Robbins said. "The Ideas are there. I just sit down and type and the stuff accumulates. There's no bag of ticks." Powerful GSpeaker All-Transistor, STEREO CONSOLE 172 Sq. In. "I was working at Universal Pictures," he said. "I used to see what Universal bought from writers. It was garbage. I knew I could do better, so I sal down and began writing." The first result was "Never Love A Stranger," and since then the successes have come like clockwork, timed to avoid the crudest tax biles. Uncle Sam's cut Is still deep, but Robbins said he does not intend to give up U.S. residence despite his more or less permanent home In southern France. He flies to New York once a month to look afier affairs at the Harold Robbins Co., set up to turn old Ideas into new pic-tures for television. One series, called "The Survl-vors," Is based on stories inspired by his best selling "The Carpetbaggers." None-of the eornpanv earnings go to Robbins, but are earmarked for a trust fund set up for his third wile, (irace, end their daughter Adriena. Film rights have earned Robbins a bundle, but none of the screen versions of the books pleased him. Rohbins has nothing official to do with "The Adventurers," but a lot of time and trouble w as taken to convince him that this time the screen version was worthy of endorsement. The producer and director Is Lewis Gilbert, who Introduced cockney hero Michael Caine In "Alfle" and made the last James Bond epic, "You Only Live Twice." Stars include Krnest Bnrg-nine, Candlce Bergen, Olivia De Havilland. opera diva Anna Moffo and French singing star Charles Aznavour.
