First, he resigned as party secretary in a power struggle with former Premier Aldo Moro. His resignation was rejected on Sunday and he emerged again as the top prospect for the premiership. The Christian Democrats united behind Rumor as Saragat dangled the threat of a Socialist premier over thier heads, by giving Socialist Al-essandro Pertini and exploratory mission to trv to find a government. Britains Foreign Office reported. The British charge d'atfairs in Peking. Percy Cradock. and another British diplomat visited Antony Grey in '.he 12-foot square room he has been kept in for a year. Grey 'told Cradock the Chinese kept him in a 10-foot square room of the house between August and November. 1967. The 30-year-old correspondent for the Reuters news agency was confined in retaliation for the arrest of several New China News Agency journalists in Hong Kong The Chinese journalists have all been released, but others were arrested Cradock said Grey appeals to have a head cold and has had chest pains for three or lour months A Chinese doctor said a chest X-ray was "not necessary. " Grev told CradocK. b 15 6 30 ROME (APi - Mariano Rumor, leader of Italy's largest political party, was named Tuesday to form a new center-left government. The 53-year-old Christian Democrat accepted the bid from President Giuseppe Sa-ragat exactly one week after the oepning of a government crisis, precipitated by the sudden resignation of Premier Giovanni Leone. Rumor followed Ihe usual procedure of accepting the mandate with "reserve." meaning he will be sworn in as premier only when and if he can tell Saragat he has found a cabinet. Rumor told. Saragat he would report "as soon as possible. " Rumor, who has headed the Christian Democrats for the past four years, was expected to succeed in forming Italy's fourth centtr-left coalition, an alliance with the Socialists and the small Rep hhcan par-tv. Both parties already have pledged bucking tor the Christian Democrat candidate. If he succeeds in forming a new Cabinet, it could mark a major turning ooint in Italy's turbulent student and labor situation. The Socialist party, defeated last May at the polls, has set the price for its participation as major labor, social and educational reforms. For the past two weeks. Italy has struggled through daily student unreast. violent labor demonstrations punctuated by bomb explosions and two nationwide strikes. A bespectacled former literature professor.
