Glaser says, could furnish 20 million kilowatts, comparable to the entire power needs of the northeastern United States in 16. By the year 2200, according to current projections, power needs will exceed by 30 per cent the energy to be expected from sources now available coal, oil, natural gas, water and atomic power based on fission. The remainder, in Glasers view, will have to come from fusion reactions either those that generate the light of the sun or those achieved on earth by taming the energy of the hydrogen bomb. The giant array of energy-converting cells would be held facing the sun by gas jets, much like those used to position spacecraft. Aiming accuracy toward the sun would not critical. However, the antenna beamed towards the earth would have to maintain pinpoint aim. This already has been achieved on deep space probes. Presumably the orbiting power stations would have lo manned by maintenance men. "In the time frame within which the use of a complete system is considered," according to Glaser, "man's role in space will have advanced to the point where a prolonged stay in orbit will be commonplace." rected by Dr. Lewis H Kuller of Johns Hopkins University. Baltimore, who reported the findings to the American Heart Association's annual meeting here. Dr. Kuller also said at a news conference that it might be possible to reduce the chance of dving of stroke by moving from high-risk to low-risk areas. The study, financed by the National Institutes of Health, examined the causes of death of 6,314 white men and women between the ages of 45 and 69 living in nine areas ol the United States: Buffalo, Miami. Denver, Seattle, Oakland. Flint Hills. Kans.. and parts of North Carolina. South Carolina and Georgia. From studying death certificates, medical records and interviews " it ' was found that about one-sixth of the deaths were due to stroke, a term applied to the impeding of the blood supply of the brain due to blood clots, rupture of the blood vessels, or the pinching of a blood vessel. Yet the rate at which fatal strokes occurred varied widely between geographical areas. The Carolinas and Georgia areas, for example hadstroke death rates, expressed in terms of deaths per 100.000 people, of about 200. The Pee Dee area of South Carolina was the highest at 2I!6. Buffalo. Seattle and Oakland were found to have intermediate rates of deaths due to strokes of about 120 for each 100.000 persons a year, while the rates in Miami. Denver and Flint Hills were in tli iOs. The Kansas area had the lowest death rate. 82. The rates given were for men. but the results for women were, while lower over-all. comparable by geographical area. Dr. Kuller. in noting that the stroke death rate for the Pee Dee area was almost three times as high as that of Flint Hills, said: "The best hypothesis is the dietary differences between the groups living in the different areas." Yet if it is diet, he added, the difference probably lies in the way the food is prepared rather than the food itself. Kuller implicated salt as a possible dietary cause, noting that southerners in general used more salt than other Americans. A salt-rich diet is known to contribute to high blood pressure, which in turn is a precursor of stroke. Fish Farm Proposed ( C I N . V . Times News Service TRURO. England - A commercial sea fish farm may be operating on the River Fal. in Cornwall, next year. Eric Hamblvn, of Feock. near Truro, a fisheries biologist, who has formulated a scheme now in an advanced planning stage, aims to produce a turnover of 10 tons of fish (probably mullet, rainbow trout, salmon, sea bass, and clover solei annually by 1974 Estimates are said to be "extremely sketchy" at present, but this tonnage could be worth up to 20.000 pounds. The idea, which has been vigorously researched by. among others, the white fish authority and unilever. has been successful on a small scale abroad, particularly in Japan. Hamblvn will initially farm young, undersized fish caught in special nets off the Cornish coast. He will keep them in large cages suspended beneath floating pontoons and permanently submerged in the sea water. Ths young fish will be dropped through traps in the pontoons and will stay in these until they reach marketing size. "Eventually, we hope to grow them from the egg. but that will require a store facility." Hamblvn said. They would be stationed 22.300 miles above the equator, where the orbital speed matches the rotation oi the earth. Thus, the two arrays would hover over the same geographical position. They would be spaced 7.900 miles apart so both would be visible to American receiving stations, yet at least one would always be in sunlight. Power generated in this manner would be converted to microwave emissions at a wavelength of 10 centimeters. Such waves can penetrate the earth's atmosphere with minimum energy loss. An antenna two kilometers il.2 miles i wide would beam these waves to a two-mile-wide antenna on earth. The energy would then be converted back into electricity for distribution.
