Palm Beach Post, Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1968-3 Economy Still Running Strong WASHINGTON (AP) -New orders for durable goods took a sharp upturn in October, with a 7.7 per cent rise (our times the monthly average of increases from April to October, the Commerce Department reported. On a seasonally adjusted ba sis new orders climbed from $28.3 billion to $30.5 billion. The sudden surge in this sector of the economy is bound to be interpreted by many observers as a sign that the economy is still running hotter than the administration would like. Many economists rate the movement of durablegoodsas an excellent early warning system for the economy, signaling expansions or contractions by their ups and downs. The transportation industry accounted for $1.4 billion of the $2.2 billion jump in new orders but gains were posted by nearly all durable goods producers, the department said. The 7.7 per cent expansion in new orders is almost double the 3.9 per cent rise that oc-cured from August to September. From April through Octo ber the average monthly rise was 1.9 per cent, though in the second half of that six-month period monthly increases were averaging 4.4 per cent. October shipments of durables increased $1.6 billion, from $27.9 billion to $29.5 billion. Transportation equip ment, principally motor vehicles and parts, contributed nearly $1 billion to the increase The 5.7 per cent increase in shipments compared with a six-month average of 1.6 per cent.
