Events scheduled this week include special homeroom displays, "pin-the-tail on the Mustang'' and the crowning of this season's homecoming queen. Wednesday, the day before the big event, will include a barbecue, the "Hornet Buzz.'' an alumni reception and a parade. Turnbull said that. In Florida, we've got to realize the necessity for a party organization, which w e've never had. "The state officeholders should realize this. We've got to find a way to rejuvenate yellow dog Democrats." They seem to have died out in this state. We've got to avoid divi-siveness between the so-called local approach and the Democrats who support the entire slate from top to bottom." said Turnbull. The term "yellow dog Democrat" refers to party members who. traditionally, were so loyal they would yote for a yellow dog if it were running on the Democratic ticket. "1 think what the national committee needs to do is take a long look at themselves and see that nothing has been done." said national commi- and has failed to encourage people to participate. "I think on a state level your state committee needs to take a long look at themselves and really define what are their responsibilities. I hope there will be a better liaison between the state and national party. There has been none. That's one reason I ran. I felt that serving on the committee I was in a better position. There's no liaison at all." Mrs. Talley said. State party chairman Pat Thomas said current efforts are concentrating on coming up with an apportionment plan to give certain geographical areas more equitable representation on the state committee. "Following a decision and implementation of any apportionment plan, there is a need for the state committee to do more in working with and providing services to such groups as the Young Democrats of Florida, who have this vear teewoman Hazel Talley of St. Petersburg. Mrs. Talley said she teels the national committee has shown lack of organization Handicapped Contest TALLAHASSEE - Governor Claude Kirk's committee on Employment of the Handicapped has extended its deadline to Feb. 7 for receiving contest entries. Dr. James F. Carr of the Board of Regents has announced. The contest is open to all Uth and 12th grade students. Theme of the contest is ""What Every Employer Should Know About Handicapped Workers." Students may learn more by visiting the Florida State Employment Service. Florida Council for the Blind, or Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Entries may be sent to the State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. 725 S. Bro-nough St.. Tallahassee. Fla R. Thomas said. "I am confident that an apportionment plan for our party can be coupled with an effective program to bring together all the working elements that I have enumerated." hesaid. Suite Comptroller Fred Dickinson, one ol six Democrat Cabinet members, said "there needs to be a tiuther awakening ol the naiional party leadership to the conservative views ot the party members and oitinal representatives in states throughout the nation." "And there needs to be a responsiveness at the national level to these feelings." Dickinson said. o o OPEN SUN. 9-5 MOM. & FRI. 9-9 TUES.-WED. A sample poll by The Associated Press indicated that another sentiment is that the national party must be more responsive to varying philosophies and seek a more active liaison with state committees.
