B4 Palm Bead; Post-Times. Sunday, Nov. 24, 1968 Anti-War Views Haven't Hurt Spock's Boot Sales NEW YORK (UPI) -"Have I lost confidence in Dr. Spock? Are you kidding?; That's my bible!" -"I really don't know much about his political views,- except that he wants as to get out of Vietnam. I only know I find his book very practical." "If someone were an atheist and he wrote an excellent book on home decoration, you wouldn't say I won't buy this book because the author doesn't believe in God, would ;ou?" ".He tells you to believe in yourself. You can't dislike a man who gives you that kind of confidence." "Give up Dr. Spock? Td rather give up my husband!" If thcige comments from young mothers e ny indication. Dr. Benjamin McLane Spock and his 20-year best-seller. "Baby and Child Care," are an interchangeable entity that spells maternal self-confidence and has nothing to do with antiwar, or antidraft speeches. In a nationwide survey by United Press International to find out bow the 65- Every one of the editions sine 1946 begins with: "Yon know more than you think you do," a statement that perhaps, explains the loyalty of every frightened mother who ever 'held a squalling, wet, week-old infant in her arms. Bookstores across the country reported little or no .change in sales of Spock's book, including the newly. updated paperback editiop published in September with a price hike from 50 to 95 cents. Recording to Pockef Books, Inc.. 643.000 copies of the new . A Los Angeles store clerk thought "other books have replaced him. Spock sales began falling off two years ago." In Boston, George Gloss, owner of Brattle Book Shop, said: "He's still selling very well. The ladies don't seem to pay much attention to his political activities, despite his trial and conviction in Bos-'ton." One area where anti-Spock Jeeting appears to have had an effect is in institutional sales where ."Baby and Child Care" is purchased by business firma, for free distribution in preroj-' ' urn, promotion or public rela- tions campaigns. Ted Benjamin of the Benja-,.min Company, which handles such sales, reported that orders for the new edition "have not caught on as well as the' older book. Undoubtedly his political activities have hurt, .but the 45 cent raise in price is also a question. However, we also think this is a lag caused, by a sales decline because the old edition was out of date." i Tro Harper books, the largest', dealer in paperbacks in the Bay Area, said: "It is the best selling paperback in its field-bar none." Some booksellers in Dallas, .Los Angeles, St. Louis and Chicago reported sales had dropped slightly, but few reported any anti-Spock reac-tion. One St. Louis bookstore owner commented, however: "We only sell one every three or four weeks now. A lot of people will say 'I don't want his books.' " edition have been sold in a little more than two months. Bookstore clerks also tended to be outspoken, whether the , ; sales were up or down. In Seattle, where "Baby and Child Care," was reported selling well, one clerk quipped: "Evidently the babies aren't playing politics." In New York, a clerk said, "Our sales are down, but I think they're going to go on using it. they're crazy if they don't." In San Francisco, Joseph Guitran, general manager of year-old pediatrician's bookk has been selling since his con- -viction last June of "conspir-ing to counsel evasion of the draft." little evidence was turned up that his political, views have, had much impact on sales. "The Baby Bible," or Just ,"Dr. Spock," has sold about 22 million copies, making it the best selling original title ever published in the United States. It has been translated into dozens of languages, including Thai and Marathi, a Sanskntic tongue.
