Passengers play cards and chess, swap stock" tips and even make business deals. It's rare, for instance, when Ben Javits doesn't greet six or seven people he knows on the plane. "Flying as long as I have, I meet many friends aboard, especially on National Airlines' 6:55 p.m. flight on Fridays. I make my golf dates, social dates and I've even been a matchmaker," Javits says with a smile. For many commuters, weekends begin when boarding the plane. Take S. Joseph Tankoos, a New York real estate man. His summer weekends are spent in Bermuda, winter weekends in Palm Beach. He always reserves the aisle seat behind the bulkhead so he can take his shoes off and put his feet up. Once he's nice and comfy, he produces a jar of caviar, hands it to the stewardess to open and serve, then relaxes with a drink. Sometimes he'll bring along a pastrami sandwich, forgoing his first-class filet mignon or lobster dinner. One man who flies Eastern to Puerto Rico every Friday measures the distance by the number of drinks he orders. "It's only a three-drink trip," he says. You might think (hat 40 round trips a year would pall on a San Francisco-Palm Springs commuter. But J. S. Bohmker never ceases to be fascinated by looking out the Western Airlines' plane win- dow- continued U.S. Census figures just released indicate at least 500,000 Americans rent or own vacation homes, condominiums and apartments from 200 to 3500 miles away, some as distant as Portugal. For many, flying is the only way to go. So great is the demand for winter weekend air reservations to Miami and Palm Beach from New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and Chicago, that the airlines have set up special commuter desks to help regulars with their long-range reservations. Three major airlines serving Florida resorts from Northeastern cities report over 1500 of these weekenders from December through March. Private planes, too, airlift an impressive number to recreation spots. On a typical winter weekend in Aspen, there are at least 100 private planes at the airport. And many members of Miami's Palm Bay Club fly down weekends in private aircraft just to board their yachts moored there. Pioneer Javits A pioneer air commuter, Ben Javits, attorney-brother of Sen. Jacob Javits, began flying to Miami when Eastern Airlines inaugurated service from New York in the '30's. Flight time then was nine hours. "I flew every two weeks, because it was such a long flight," Mr. Javits says. Today, he flies weekly between his New York and Palm Beach homes in two hours and 25 minutes.
