Lynn (19-1), ranked No. 2 in the nation, plays No. 5 Cal State-Bakersfield (19-4) at 1 p.m. at McCusker Sports Complex. "In my opinion, every playoff game's a championship game," said Pendleton, whose team defeated four-time national champion Southern Connecticut State 1-0 in Friday's semifinals. "I gathered a few more gray hairs in the last couple of minutes." Southern Connecticut All-America defenders Mike Petke, Itai Mor and Guy Zucker were 79-3-7 during four years with the Owls. They reached the Division II semifinals four times and won the title in 1995. The Owls (21-1-1), who lost for only the third time in four seasons, had several chances to tie the score late in the second half. But Lynn's goalie Matt Nelson made spectacular saves, two in particular against Mor, a senior from Holon, Israel, and sophomore Asaf Dagai, from Ein-Sheimer, Israel. "I wasn't too worried," Nelson said. "With Gareth, Darren (War-ham) and Dylan (Kendrick) in the back, not too many balls are going to get through." Lynn won NAIA titles under Roy Wiggemansen in 1987 and Pendleton in 1991. This is Lynn's second season at the NCAA Division II level and its first time in the championship game. Last year the Knights fell to Grand Canyon University 1-0 in a semifinal match.. The women's team, which lost to Franklin Pierce 1-0 in last Horse racing Rivera and Overcharger avoided the traffic by sweeping around the field to pass five horses in the stretch. The Florida-bred mare owned by Gordon Stafford of Ocala had won just once this year, a $100,000 stakes at Penn National. She broke a seven-race losing streak Saturday, returning $38.80 for every $2 bet on her to win. "She has a one-run style, so I always tell the jockey not to rush her at the start," said trainer Ar-turo Rodriguez. Overcharger never appeared on the television monitors Saturday until the race's last seconds. "She is never in the picture," said the trainer. "I never even look for her on the television. You have to find her on the track if you want to see her races." It is not likely that Overcharger will be seen again at Calder. "She may take the rest of the year off and race at Gulfstream," said Rodriguez. "I think she is entitled to a rest." STILL THE PALM BEACHES 1 ADULT ENTERTAINMENT LOUNGE Mon.-Sat. 9am til ? By John Crittenden Palm Beach Post Staff Writer The hardest worker in a field of 12, Overcharger jumped in front for the first time in the last 10 yards Saturday to win the My Charmer Handicap at Calder. Overcharges, at 18-1 odds, was running for the 14th time this year, a busier work schedule than any other horse's in the race. The 5-year-old mare ridden by Jose Rivera II finished a half-length in front of another long shot, 22-1 Dance Clear. Not all the drama in the 1 Vs-mile race on the turf came at the finish. Golden Pond, the race favorite, clipped the hedge as Jerry Bailey tried to steer her through a slim opening in mid-stretch. The 4- year-old filly fell, losing her bridle and throwing Bailey to the grass. Bailey walked away and said he was not hurt. Golden Pond may be injured, but the damage is not life-threatening, said Dr. Mary Scollay, the track veterinarian. "It was tight and I just didn't make it," said Bailey, the nation's eading rider in earnings.
