As the debate continued to swirl around Latrell Sprewell, the former Golden State Warriors guard remained quiet about his contract termination and the altercation with his coach that led to it. Sprewell may talk Tuesday or Wednesday, according to his agent, Arn Tellem. NBA notebook Behind the scenes, there's been a lot oi talk about the incident with coach P.J. Carlesimo, which led to the Warriors' termination of Sprewell's contract and the NBA's one-year suspension. "Obviously we have to fight this," Tellem said. "It's unreasonable. The NBA is a monopoly that's denying him his ability to work for a year. That's outrageous. In other industries, he'd at least have a chance to get a job in a similar field. He can't, and that's what's so outrageous." Although it had been reported that several parties had contacted the Rev. Jesse, Jackson over the Sprewell's situation, representatives for Jackson on Saturday denied his involvement. "Contrary to published reports, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. is not working with or advising Latrell Sprewell or any of his official representatives," a statement from Jackson's offices read. "Rev. Jackson has not spoken with Mr. Sprewell , ' or ; any of y Mr. Sprewell's official representatives." 1 The statement went on to say that any report of Jackson Knlcks 90, Hornets 79 FG FT Reb Min M-A M-A O-T A PF Pts A-24,041 (24,041). Clippers, late "What I'm telling you is, the questions have to be asked,'" , Brown said. "All questions and all facts have to be gotten out before people start jumping off the bridge and making this man Public Enemy No. 1 of basketball." Tellem, meanwhile, said late Friday that he and Sprewell had spoken to attorney Johnnie Cochran. "We both have talked to him, but he has not been retained," Tellem said. Messages left at Cochran's offices in Southern California seeking comment were not immediately returned. On the court Friday night, the Warriors beat the Orlando Magic 104-89, just their second victory of the season. But the week's events surrounding Sprewell clearly overshadowed the game. Joe Smith's taped ankle featured Sprewell's nickname, "Spree" and his number written in black magic marker. being a part, or becoming a part, of an "advisory team" to Sprewell is false. "The only circumstance under which Rev. Jackson would possibly become involved would be in a clergy capacity in which Mr. Sprewell would come to Rev. Jackson and ask for counseling and other clergy assistance," the statement said. San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, meanwhile, back-pedaled from earlier statements he made to reporters suggesting that Sprewell could have been provoked by Carlesimo. "There is no justification for violence of any nature in our society," Brown said. "Violence in the workplace or anyplace else cannot be condoned under any circumstances." Brown, who said he has spoken to Sprewell, said he was concerned that Sprewell has not been given his due process. Percentages: FG .384, FT .667. Rockets 108, Mays 106 FG FT Reb HOUSTON Min M-A M-A O-T A PF Pts lar-season game in Mexico was a success for the league and the Houston Rockets. Charles Barkley had 19 points and 17 rebounds as the Rockets beat the Dallas Mavericks 108-106 Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 20,635 at the Sports Palace. The Mavericks officially were the home team, but the crowd rooted for the Rockets. Fans stood and cheered every time Houston scored. They whistled every time Dallas attempted a free throw. "I'm here to see Barkley," said Fabiola Rivera, a 23-year-old elementary school teacher. "I've been a fan of his for the last 10 years. Seeing him here today is a dream come true." Michael Finley scored a career-high 35 points for Dallas, which was playing its second game under coach Don Nelson, who took over Wednesday after Jim Cleamons was fired. Finley's 3-pointer with 8.5 seconds left cut Houston's lead to 107-103. After Matt Maloney of the Rockets was called for traveling, Finley was fouled by Clyde Drexler while shooting a 3-pointer. Finley made all three free throws to make it 107-106 with five seconds remaining. Finley then fouled Mario Elie, who made one of two foul shots with 3.1 seconds left for the win. B Wizards 114, Timberwolves 103: , Chris Webber had 33 points and 12 rebounds as Washington remained perfect in their new home. Juan Howard added 26 points for the Wizards, who are 3-0 at the MCI Center after opening the season 0-5 in their old building, USAirways Arena. Minnesota's Stephon Marbury had a slight edge over Rod Strickland in a matchup of two of the league's top point guards. Marbury finished with 27 points and seven assists, while Strickland had 17 points and 10 assists. Tom Gugliotta, who missed part of the third quarter after getting an accidental elbow under his left eye from Webber, finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Timber-wolves. Kevin Garnett, who was 9-for-14 from the field, added 21 points for Minnesota. Washington took an 81-79 lead on Tracy Murray's three-pointer with 9:32 left in the fourth quarter, and the Wizards never trailed again. B Knicks 90, Hornets 79: John Starks scored 27 points and Charlie Ward sparked a third-quarter surge that gave New York its sixth straight home victory. Starks had 16 of his points in the second quarter and Ward scored all 10 of his in the third, including a pair of three-pointers and a layup in succession that allowed the Knicks to break open a close game. .
