Right winger Peter Worrell, the victim of a racial slur by Washington's Craig Berube two weeks ago, and goal-tender Kevin Weekes are two black players in the Panthers organization Brian Biggane Panthers who could have long careers in the NHL. Worrell is just 20, and Weekes 22, but both already have had a taste of discrimination. "It'c a littlo Hicannnintina " Worrell said last week before being sent back to New Haven of the American Hockey League. "I'm trying to make my niche for being a hockey player, and the first time you get on ESPN or in USA Today, it's for this." " Berube's slur was actually minor compared to what happened to Worrell in some of the small towns in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season. When he went to Val D'Or for the playoffs with Hull, fans threw bananas on the ice and a picture of a monkey was used above his name in the program guide. "I wouldn't say the teams encourage it, but they don't do a lot to stop it either," said Tim Murray, who scouts the Quebec League for the Panthers. "Quebec as a society is just less tolerant as a whole." At another town, Shewanigan, a fan used the arena's public-address system to spew racial insults. After that experience, Worrell said he was a bit surprised so much was made of Berube's slur. His previous experience also probably contributed to him accepting Berube's apology when Berube phoned him the next day. "He seemed sincere," Worrell said, "so I accepted. Now I'm on to other things." But Worrell still doesn't understand the mind-set from which such words are produced. "I mean, I can understand saying things in the heat of battle, to try and get a guy off his game," he said. "But there should be limits. Getting into a person's ethnic background or religion is crossing the line. . "For me to come up to a guy who's French and call him a Frog, or to call somebody of the Jewish faith a Heeb, that would be unbelievable, something I could never do. It's not somebody's fault they're French, or black. It's just circumstances." Weekes, whose parents emigrated from Barbados to Toronto before he was born, encountered little racism in his career until he got to Carolina two years ago, where a former fellow Panther prospect (who not surprisingly had played junior hockey in Quebec) made a number of racist comments to him over the course of the season. The following summer, Weekes complained to management, who responded by releasing the offending player outright. "It's always disappointing when people aren't treated right," said Panthers coach and general manager Bryan Murray, who has acknowledged taking a leading role in that decision. NHL tough guys have a history of trash-talking as a way of inciting an opponent. When enforcers like Worrell and Edmonton rookie George Laraque happen to be black, it's conceivable though hardly forgivable that such talk can cross the line into racism. Bryan Murray believes that Berube remembered being pound ed by Worrell in a fight during a pre-season game last year in Nova Scotia and didn't want to be embarrassed by him again. By responding to the situation with a slur, he avoided a confrontation. Murray believes the susnen- sions handed Washington's Chris Simon (three eames for his slur against Edmonton's Mike Grier) and Berube (two games) are a message that the leaeue won't tolerate such behavior. The problem won't iust disan- pear. With the number of blacks in the NHL increasing from six last season to nine this vear and scores more hoping to work their way up from the college and junior ranKS tne league needs to stress a zero-toierance policy. "It's like hitting a cuv from behind and putting his head into the boards," Murray said. "It won't be tolerated. I think thU c i i . iinuiinauon nas neen passed on, and normal human beings understand that." Player GP G A Pt -f P S Pet L S.Corson 29 11 22 33 5 38 57 19.3 R M. Recchl 29 13 16 29 9 12 57 22.1 C S. "She's always been extremely high energy, very interested in everything going on around her. I think it's rare in tennis players." It also has been the hardest part of retiring for Shriver. She agreed to do too much. Luckily her boyfriend usually can travel with her, but a day without commitments is rare. "I've always wanted to do a lot of things," she said. "Now, I'm starting to see I can maintain a busybody (lifestyle) but still wake up in the morning with nothing on the calendar." Last November, Shriver had an empty day and was preparing for a trip to Montana to see Marion and her husband. Then someone called and offered her a last-minute chance to play in a tournament in Oakland, Calif. She had an hour to decide and because she'd had a good week of practice, decided to play. Then she had to call Marion. "It was one of our shakier moments," Shriver said. "And I can understand. A year later, she's gone and I do think about it." But she doesn't regret it. She won a round of the tournament, which became her second-to-last singles tournament before she officially retired in February. Plus, there were lots of other visits, including one after this year's Legends stop in Nashville in October, with Marion and the rest of her family. "Even in that, she did everything that was right," Forniciari said. "As far as anybody could have been ready and done everything she could have that was humanly possible, she did it." Which is why 6Vz weeks isn't long enough to eliminate the tears, but it is long enough to let Shriver talk about her sister proudly, play tennis with joy and even do the "Macarena" in front of 5,000 fans. "I think she's really happy in her life right now," Forniciari said. "I think she's feeling pretty fulfilled." in Master final Tennis By Elizabeth Clarke Palm Beach Post Staff Writer DELRAY BEACH Six and a half years of cancer wasn't enough to prepare Pam Shriver for her sister's death, so expecting six and a half weeks of grieving to take the pain away is impossible. Shriver, a former No. 3 tennis player in the world, admits easily that tears come sometimes when she thinks of Marion Shriver Abel. "Last night I lost it again," Shriver said Saturday after playing in the - Virginia Slims Legends tournament. "Chrissie (Evert) made a toast and said, 'Marion and Jerry are in a better place.' " But she was with friends, and that made it easier. Tour players and sponsors gathered Friday night for dinner at an Atlantic Avenue restaurant to honor Jerry Diamond, new namesake for the tour's year-end trophy. The pioneer of women's tennis died of cancer a year ago. Abel died Oct. 23 at age 37. A year ago, she was here with Shriver and visiting a West Palm Beach clinic. She watched the tennis Saturday and joined the players afterward at Evert's Boca Raton home. Shriver's friends embraced her sister. At the funeral service, Shriver was overwhelmed to see Evert there. : Everyone's letters and notes have helped with the grief. "I never knew what pain was until that happened," Shriver said. "It wasn't a shock that she died, but it was a physical pain, literally, a heartache." Shriver, whose mother and 89-year-old grandmother are here this year, also has been adjusting to her first full year off the tour after 18 years. She has filled her days with service, work and a relationship. The end of her career was a two-year transition. She decreased the number of tournaments while increasing her TV tennis commentary work and time spent on her charity and boards. In January, she added a two-year term as a United States Tennis Association board member to her duties. She enjoys the work because it lets her contribute to tennis beyond the professional ranks. "She really is very articulate, is not afraid to state her mind and has a good business sense about her," USTA President Harry Mar-mion said. "She's very knowledga-ble, I think because of her time with the Orioles and work in sportscasting." The Baltimore native is a minority owner of the Orioles and serves on the boards of Loyola College and McDonogh School, her alma mater, among others. Sara Forniciari, director of the WTA Tour Players Association, gave Shriver the wild card for her first and last tournaments and was her agent for many years in between. She admires how Shriver eased off the tour while still pursuing her new career interests.
