ws THE PALM BEACH POST SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1997 38 Be La Hoy a still winning despite changes said. "I call my own shots. I say situation. I don't want nothing is all about. He really understood because he didn't yet know how what goes on in my training camp. People need to understand I have to live my own life and go with my own instincts. "The only reason I went with this decision was I didn't want friction between us. My father had a hunch that Emanuel was not spending enough time with me. I love Emanuel Steward, but my father didn't agree with my opinion and I went with his decision. There's been other times when I wouldn't budge. In the end, it's what I say." Not when the issue has been a shift in trainers. First Alcazar was demoted when De La Hoya struggled with John John Molina between us. Blood is thicker than water. It (Steward staying) could have made problems." The history of father-son problems in boxing is a long one. Paternal input didn't work for Wilfredo Benitez or Darren Van Home or Mike and Jerry Quarry or Roy Jones Jr. or most of the many others who have tried it. The trainer directs and can even demand, but he cannot dictate if the relationship is to last. A father, at least at times, can take the dictator's stance. But if it happens too often, the son rebels. That did not happen this time, even though De La Hoya says that were it up to him, Steward would be in his corner. But what if something goes wrong? What if Clancy's plan doesn't work or De La Hoya doesn't listen to Alcazar? Or, simply, what if Rivera (29-2-1) fights him as well as or even better than he fought in two close losses to then welterweight champion Pernell Whitaker? Father knows best What happens in Oscar De La Hoya's corner then, and what does he say to his father later? Nobody knows, not even the fighter. "With Don Jesus (Rivero), it was all hard work. Emanuel gave me the confidence that he was teaching me, but he kept it fun. If it had been solely up to me, yes, of course, he would still be here." Power struggle But Steward is not with him because he tangled with De La Hoya's father, Joel. The father felt the son was not training hard enough or sparring often enough, information he allegedly was fed by Alcazar, a longtime family friend. When Steward allowed De La Hoya to break camp for a day to attend the Evander Holyfield-Michael Moorer heavyweight title fight last month in Las Vegas, the situation came to a head and Steward lost his, professionally speaking. He was informed of his dismissal not by De La Hoya but by family adviser Mike Hernandez. "The dismissal of Emanuel Steward did affect me that day," De La Hoya said. "I've spoken to him since but I didn't tell him. My adviser did. I never thought it would be this big a thing. "I hate arguing with my father. That is a question Oscar De La Hoya seems to be trying to answer. When the World Boxing Council welterweight champion went into the ring Saturday to face Wil-fredo Rivera, he entered it without veteran trainer Emanuel Steward for the first time in De La Hoya eight months, an abrupt shift he says was out of his control. Three fights ago, De La Hoya went into the ring with Steward but without Jesus Rivero, who had previously taken over De La Hoya's training from Robert Alcazar, who had handled him throughout his amateur career and into his early days as a professional. ; Alcazar has been shuffled aside . twice but has never left De La Hoya's corner. He will be there again, this time standing next to 70:something Gil Clancy, who once trained Emile Griffith and has Yerplank still record round Steve Hart, Pat Bates cind Gene Fieger lead area golfers, all tied for 12th. The Associated Press ; ; GRENELEFE Kent Jones shot an eight-under-par 64 Saturday to tie the course record on the West course at Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort and move into second place at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. Jones, of Carlsbad, N.M., made a 35-foot birdie putt on his final fiole to tie the mark held by several players, including Scott Ver-plank, who continues to sit atop the leaderboard after Saturday's ibjirth round. Verplank, at 267, has a six-shot tead. i. "I just managed to do everything right," said Jones, who has a fbyr-round total of 13-under 273. '1 Steve Hart of Tequesta, Pat Bates of Boca Raton and Gene Fieger of Port St. Lucie lead area players, all at 279, in a 12th-place tie. Bates shot a 68, and Hart and fieger followed strong third-round scores with 71s. Hart had a 63 on Friday and Fieger shot 66. Five area players are among the top 35 scorers (and ties), which in the final standings will qilalify for a PGA Tour card for lp. That De La Hoya is among the most talented fighters in the world is readily apparent from his 26-0 record and world titles in four weight classes at the age of 24. But his constant shuffling of trainers gives one pause to wonder just how long this endless shifting of the men who prepare him for battle can go on without his suffering some ill effects. Even De La Hoya seemed to hint in the days leading up to this fight that the strife that led to a split between Steward, a trainer with whom he says he was always happy, and his father has ended. Obviously, that didn't happen soon enough to save Steward, but hopefully, it will come in time to save De La Hoya from a slippage in his ring performances, which thus far have been nearly flawless despite the periodic problems in his corner. "I felt comfortable with Emanuel Steward," De La Hoya said. "He trained me good. He brought life into the training camp. He made it fun for me. He gave me confidence. B Mickelson leads Sun City: With a steady nerve and precision short game in a swirling wind. Phil Mickelson held off Bernhard Langer's challenge to take the lead after three rounds of the Million Dollar Challenge in Sun City, South Africa. Langer shot a 67 and was one stroke ahead of Nick Price, who shot a 68. Davis Love III and Ernie Els were at 209, with Love shooting a 74 and Els a 70. Wesley, a junior at Pensacola Catholic High School, is the youngest player in this weekend's field. "It was fun, I really enjoyed playing with him," Wesley said. "I got a chance to spend a real 18 holes with him." And as fathers often do, Jerry couldn't help but offer a little advice, as well as encouragement, to his playing partner. "There's a lot of little subtleties on a day like today that only experience can tell you how to play a lot of the shots," Pate said."Sometimes, you just have to let them make the choices." The pair finished four strokes off the lead, heading into today's final round with an eight-under-par 64. "That's what we were shooting for," Pate said. "We played better than eight under, we just missed a lot of putts. But we're really excited about our chances to win."
