Makeup Refresher Vsi Ehud Barak, who heads the opposition Labor Party, told Israeli television Friday night that "for some 20 years, this case officer has been presenting fabricated material" as having come from "a not insignificant source" that Mossad maintains in Syria. Other accounts suggested that the reported Syrian agent is a high-ranking military officer. The state-owned but independently run TV network reported that the case officer's mo-tivation appeared to be "psychological," including the promotion of his career. The officer reportedly has been a member of Moledet, a far-right political party that takes a hard line against peace-making with Israel's Arab neighbors. But "there was no ideological motive" in his actions, Barak said. Israeli military censors have prevented the media from naming the officer or discussing allegations that he might have profited illegally from his intelligence work. The network said the case officer had made a detailed confession and possibly faces criminal charges of breach of trust and theft. It suggested that formal charges against the man are likely to be brought before the Dec. 17 arrival here of Defense Secretary William S. Cohen. Are you ready for relief without surgery? The Wasliington Post JERUSALEM An officer of Mossad, Israel's external intelligence agency, fed the government fabricated information about Syria, contributing to tension between Syria and Israel last year that raised the potential of military conflict, media accounts and Israeli officials said. The scandal, parts of which seeped out through censored newspaper reports this week, has caused more trouble for Mossad, which already is being investigated over its failed attempt in September to assassinate a leader of the Palestinian extremist group Hamas. It has led to renewed calls for Israeli prime ministers to appoint independent advisers to help monitor the agency. Accounts by Israeli journalists and officials say a Mossad case officer, who supervised a Syrian agent, for a number of years made up reports that he presented to superiors as having come from the agent. In August 1996, when Israeli intelligence was monitoring Syrian troop movements in neighboring Lebanon, the officer faked reports indicating that Syria was preparing an assault on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to accounts in the three main Hebrew-language newspapers. Israel presented the intelligence to U.S. officials, who dismissed it, according to the daily Haaretz. Israel's military intelligence service also disagreed, and Defense Minister Yitzhak Mor-dechai resisted suggestions that he mobilize reserve units in preparation for possible combat, the accounts said. "We do not base our views on just one source of information," Mordechai told the daily Yedioth Aharonoth. Yedioth Aharonoth reported that, in 1993, with the United States brokering Israeli-Syrian ! peace talks in Washington, Mos-i sad argued to the government of then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin that Syria was not really interested in peace. Again, that time, the newspaper said, the government sided with a dissenting view from military intelligence although the talks ultimately failed. Still, the possibility that a rogue officer may have frustrated peace efforts is being debated here. The reportedly fabricated "information contributed to the formulation of Mossad's position ; . . . in particular with respect to ; Syria, and thus in one way or another it influenced political 'decision-making," Yedioth Aha-'.ronoth said. ! In the most extensive com-; ment on the scandal by an official, ; former military chief of staff Murder of Netanyahu's hairdresser a mystery 'The deaths of the Israeli prime minister's j stylist and his girlfriend was a murder-suicide. Reuters JERUSALEM A murder-suicide that claimed the lives of the hairdresser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the stylist's model girlfriend gripped ; Israel on Wednesday. David Afuta, 38, and Anat Elimelech, 23, were found dead in , their Jerusalem apartment Tuesday. He had two bullet holes in his chest; she had one. Police said one of the victims had killed the other and then committed suicide, but they could not say who pulled the trigger or why. The deaths were splashed ; across the front pages of Israeli newspapers and were the main topic of conversation on radio talk i shows. Afuta had frequently visited , the home of Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, to style their hair. The Shin Bet security service, in charge of protecting the Net-, anyahus, planned to investigate whether it had erred in allowing him access to the couple, the Ha 'aretz daily said. " "I am absolutely stunned and shocked," Sara Netanyahu was quoted as saying by Yedioth Ahro-noth newspaper. r Sj $!l)98 OlKHLOPflii I )) y (lil98 ih I GENESIS YOUTH TNT D XE3.1 ADULT ? &Z IN-LINE SKATES rr r i (,U S IN-LINE SKATES I ' iTLl 64mm wheels, removable lJ r Al l M i 72mm 82A HRB wheels, II I nylon mesh inner boot.
