AP - The skull of a small whale which its finders say may be 20 million years old 'has been unearthed by a team of scientists who are digging for fossils from the Miocene Age near here. The badly crushed skull, found Tuesday in a bed of clam shells, measures five feet long by three feet wide, indicating the animal was about 20 feet long, said Dr. Frank G. Whitmore Jr.. an expert in vertebrate paleontology with the U.S. Geological Survey. Whitemore described the skull as "a fairly important find." He said excavation would begin today by a team vation "will be a ticklish operation." "Whether we will be able to completely salvage it is still an open question." he said. The scientists are digging in a 1.2 mile section of the cliffs which is being developed for Maryland's first nuclear reactor by the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. of scientists from the Smithsonian Institution and Geological Survev. L.M. Ward, an assistant field director, discovered the skull and along with director Robert W. Vostreys dug a trench around the area.
