Coupes and convertibles were ibid side-by-side until the soft-top was discontinued in 1976. Many former, one-time Corvette owners either haven't heard, or don't believe, that the redesigned Corvette is a truly well-engineered, well-constructed machine. These aren't the Corvette loyalists who have so loved the car that they continued to buy them despite the shortcomings. - When driving the coupe last year and the convertible a couple of weeks ago, I was besieged by former Vette owners with questions about engineering and quality. I heard countless tales of disappointment and frustration from so stunning with its top down that only very bad weather will make you raise the lid. A push of the button releasing the hard tonneau cover also automatically lowers the windows. Turning two handles on the headliner releases the top from the windshield and the whole contraption simply folds behind the seat. The tonneau cover then snaps into place. Chevrolet says it designed the new Vette to be a convertible, adding more reinforcements to its substructure. Indeed, the new convertible exhibits more rigidity than past Corvette coupes. It is solid and quiet. An optional $1,700 variable damping system allows the driver to fine-tune the suspension for "tour," "sport" or "performance." Goodyear Extended Mobility Tires or run-flat tires are standard and are designed to be driven 50 miles once deflated. . men and women, who, upon finally buying their dream car, were faced with a vehicle that was less than user friendly and had a tendency to shake to pieces. These are the people Chevrolet must reach. These are the one-time believers, the people with the desire and money to purchase the newest edition of the Corvette. It requires no more than a quick glance at the Corvette to be smitten by its restyled looks. It's The Corvette cabin no longer requires the driver and passengers to climb way down or way up.
