QYou got it NETGUIDE home, only to find out all the best parts are on the box art. Wouldn't it have been nice to discover that beforehand? Maybe you like the game, but it's full of bugs. Or it constantly crashes, or features graphic anomalies, sluggish game play and incredibly stupid computer opponents. Game developers try to fully test their games before releasing them, but often version 1.0 is not perfect. To keep their tech support people from being swamped by angry gamers, companies release patches or updates for their games. A patch is a program designed to address specific glitches or to enhance game elements. Developers provide patches free at company Web sites. But if you have several games that need a tune-up, going to each site can be laborious. Game publishers also know the best way to get people interested in their product is to whet their appetites with a small taste of the full game. These demos also can be found at company Web sites, but you can avoid a lot of surfing at one of these one-stop shops for patches and demos. fl Demo Domain (http:www.reno .quik.comandrewslydemoHdomian index.shtml is a great place to find demos for big-name games, such as Quake II. There are no busy plug-ins or unnecessary frames. Every section is clearly marked. A handy list of the most recent demos keeps you updated without having to sift through the old stuff. Sit down with any family members who plan to use the computer and make a list of things you ' would like to do with it Will your children be using it in school? If so, what kind does the school use? Are you using it for work, recreation or both? What kind does your office use? Do you want to surf the Internet? Does your work require the use of specialty programs? Are they available for PC and Mac? ; . A good idea is to visit a user group in your area. Go to both PC and Mac groups because each will tout its own platform. Buying a computer is a hefty investment You'll probably spend about $2,500 these days for a nice system. Palm Beach Post Wire Services Lego Island is a world populated by buildings, vehicles and people built out of the world's top-selling construction blocks. The program from Mindscape (Windows- Macintosh; QCYBERSTUFF about $35) is an action adven ture game for the 6-to-12 age group. It is the first computer program using the 65-year-old company's building blocks. Lego Island on disk has three dozen different Lego people. Children play the game by assuming the character of one of five Lego inhabitants, ranging from a constable to a pizza-delivery boy on in-line skates. Children use the mouse to navigate.
