THE PALM BEACH POST SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1 997 3C 1993 original Marlins now just a long-lost memory Marlins days since Wayne Huizenga's announcement that he would sell the team to an ownership group headed by team President Don Smiley. At the time, Huizenga said Smiley had 30 days to assemble the investors and the money. Smiley did not return phone calls Friday. Dombrowski also is fielding calls about left-handed starter Al Leiter. The San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians are interested in Leiter, who is a comparative bargain at $3 million for next season. BSale update? For those who are curious, today marks 30 Matt Clement and Rafael Medina, both well-regarded prospects, but the Padres don't want to trade both. Other teams interested in Brown and his $4.9 million salary include the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros, now that the Astros have lost Darryl Kile to the Colorado Rockies. Infielder Alex Arias, the last of the original Marlins, is designated for assignment. By Dan Graziano fnim-Beach Post Staff Writer The last of the original Florida Marlins has said goodbye. Alex Arias, a 30-year-old utility infielder and pinch-hitter, was designated for assignment Friday by the. Marlins, making it likely that another team will claim him off waivers. The move was made necessary by the acquisition of Brandon Cromer, a utility infielder who spent last season in the Pittsburgh Pirates' minor-league system. Arias' contract expired at the end -of the 1997 season, and he might have expected to receive an increase on his $450,000 salary in ar bitration. Cromer, 23, is younger lins in each of their five seasons, and is the team's all-time leader with 44 pinch-hits. Cromer spent five seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays' organization before being traded to Pittsburgh last winter. He hit 230 in 123 games split between Class AA Carolina and Class AAA Calgary in 1997. He plays second base, shortstop and third base. B Trade winds: The San Diego Padres continue to be the most dogged pursuers of Marlins pitcher Kevin Brown, though they're not the only team interested. Padres General Manager Kevin Towers has spoken with Marlins GM Dave Dombrowski this week, and is interested in making Brown his No. 1 starter for 1998. "We're trying very hard to get him," Towers said. "But right now it's up to the Marlins to decide how they evaluate our offer." The Marlins have asked the Padres for minor-league pitchers and cheaper. "Alex has done a lot for the organization," Marlins General Manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He is a class person who has represented us well both on and off the field. "We like Cromer's ability and versatility, and we feel he certainly has a chance to compete for a position on the club out of spring training." Arias was flying Friday to the Dominican Republic, where he is playing in the winter league. He and Jeff Conine were the only two members of the Marlins' World Series championship team that were on the opening-day roster in the club's inaugural season of 1993. Conine was traded to the Kansas City Royals last month. Arias has played for the Mar ism IU1MIMM i Lofton returning to Indians? No Boys of Summer Games: Don't expect to see major league baseball stars playing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Since the games will be held the same time as the September pennant races, minor leaguers are more likely to be playing for the medals. U.S. Olympic Committee officials met in Switzerland this week with International Baseball Association president Aldo Notari to discuss the outlook for professionals playing in the games. The IBA will meet next week with Donald Fehr, head of the players union. But there's little chance big leaguers will be available to play in Sydney, mainly because the games are scheduled Sept. 16-Oct. 1, the final two weeks of the season. The international federation voted in 1995 to open baseball to professionals. NBA stars already compete in the games, and the NHL is shutting down for two weeks to allow its players to compete for the first time in the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. 97 Wellcroft Martinique 3600 $1 48,550 $ 1 1 3,722 loaded, In cabin AC, gen., kemoker, TV, windlass. Cleveland traded Lofton and pitcher Alan Embree to Atlanta for Marquis Grissom and David Justice, on March 25. Lofton, a four-time Gold Glover and five-time AL stolen base champion, was an emotional and .offensive catalyst who. led the Indians to their first American League pennant in 41 years in 1995. An ESPN report said that if Lofton signed with Cleveland, Grissom likely would be traded, perhaps in a multi-team deal. ..Grissom is due to make $5 million, in 1998, the first year of a $25 million, five-year deal he signed with the Indians in May. Lofton made $4.75 million in 1997, but is thought to be seeking $& million to $10 million a year. A lack of interest by other , teams and Lofton's history in Cleveland could drive the price dawn. After Lofton's injury-plagued, sub-par season with the Braves, interest in him was limited to Cleveland and Milwaukee. Lofton batted .333 for Atlanta but stole only 27 bases because of groin and leg injuries. -H Orioles sign Kamieniecki: Baltimore signed 33-year-old right-hander Scott Kamieniecki to DECEMBER 4-7 ONLY 9am7pm Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun.
