Can flf Boating By JACK WOLISTON NEW YORK (LTD -- A strung international flavor will be in evidence this coming Thanksgiving Day weekend at the tilth annual running ol the Outboard World Championships at Lake Havasu City. Ariz. A number of foreign design boats are among the 140 or more craft expected to compete in the two-day event at the resort community on the Colorado River. It will be one ot the first head-on tests in this country between European and American designs. Topping the imports are cratt designed by Dieter Schulze of Austria and Renato Molinari of Italy. About six of each are expected to be at the starting line when the endurance test gets underway Nov. 30 over a four-mile, boomerang-shaped course. The Molinari hulls are considered exceptionally fast, corner with very little slip and have established an enviable record in competition abroad. Last month. Renato Molinari. piloting one of his own designs, set a new distance record in winning the Six Hours of Paris endurance race on the River Seine, outdistancing 72 other challengers and finishing 19 miles ahead of his nearest competition. His sled-shaped hydro cat was powered by a single Merc 125. The Schulze design won't be new to Lake Havasu. Dieter Schulze brought one of his craft to Arizona for the championships in 1966 and scored an impressive win in U Class 'single engines. 70 cubic inches and overt. He also picked up an award as the most outstanding driver competing for the first time in the Havasu, event. There were three Schulze cats in last year's renewal and one of them, piloted by Jim McConnell of Needles, Calif., and powered by a Johnson 115. roared away with top honors in the single-engine class again and finished eighth over-all. McConnell gave the hull a real test. Charging down the backstretch with about two hours left in the eight-hour marathon, he hit a wave and nosed in. Although the hull almost filled with water, McConnell got his motor started again and made it back to the nits. The boat was drained and Ted May of Long Beach, Calif., took over driving duties and held onto the lead McConnell had built up. McConnell went to the hospital for treatment of facial lacerations he suffered when his head hit the cowling in the choppy waters. McConnell is expected to be back this year along with some other prominent drivers who will be competing for $30,000 in cash and prizes in the richest outboard race in the world. Among them, pairing as co-pilots and driving a multi-engine craft, will be Gold Cup hydroplane champion Mira Slovak of Santa Monica, Calif., and Jim Hurtubise, the Indianapolis 500 driver from North Tonawanda, N.Y. Slovak, who fled Czechoslo-vankia in a hi-jacked plane in 1953 when the country was under strict Communist control, is just getting over injuries suffered last May when a glider crashed at Santa Paula, Calif., after he had flown it from Germany to this country. The small plane was equipped with a 36 horsepower engine. Slovak was national hydroplane champion in 1958 and 1966 and made one successful run for the Gold Cup. ub. 8oz. Pkg.
