Nesmith Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Hospice of the Treasure Coast soon will have one more way to take care of the terminally ill in St. Lucie County. The non-profit organization has a contract to buy a house in White City for patients who either don't have their own homes or who don't have friends or family members who can care for them at home. The house, on Midway Road, will cost about $500,000 and will need some renovations, director Sharon Rivers said. "There are a lot of people who come to the South to retire and have a great day in paradise, and either their spouse precedes them in death or their spouse is as ill as they are and they can't care for them. rVavi 290 291 293 393 394 193t IS-oa 3V7. 391 199 300 ; 301 , M-.j "Our main focus is to keep them at home," Rivers said. "When they get to a certain point and it's no longer safe, now we have a place for them." Once the renovations are done, probably by April, Hospice will be able to take in those patients and care for them in a setting that's friendlier and more comfortable than a hospital, Rivers said. The house is situated on almost 8 acres that includes two ponds, large oaks and flowering shrubs. Hospice plans to put a chapel in the house, as well as recreation rooms for patients and a large kitchen and dining area. The house was previously used as an assisted living facility. This is really exciting for us," Rivers said. For more information about Hospice services, to volunteer, or to donate, call (561) 465-0504. TIOO rVk Ua. Comry .. Judges opt not to take bribe case By Christine Stapleton Palm Beach Post Staff Writer WEST PALM BEACH - The five remaining criminal court judges eligible to preside over the bribery trial of attorneys Phil Butler and V. Ted Brabham signed letters disqualifying themselves Friday, and an appeals court agreed to delay the Monday opening of the trial. The 4th District Court of Appeal issued a stay Friday shortly after the five judges, including one assigned to the case Thursday, said they couldn't hear the case. The judges offered no explanations, simply writing a one-page statement that they would all "be unable to handle the case." Circuit Judge Walter Colbath was prepared to assign retired Judge James R. Stewart Jr. but declined to do so in the wake of the appeals court stay. Butler, a failed Republican candidate for state attorney, and Brabham, Butler's campaign manager, were arrested and charged with accepting bribes of $680,000 in illegal campaign contributions from James Clyde Baberlll. Baber, president of Badcock Economy Furniture, told investigators that Butler and Brabham promised to take care of Baber's DUI manslaughter case if Butler was elected. Baber, the state's key witness against Butler and Brabham, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 1,6. But Assistant State Attorney Cass Castillo, a Bartow prosecutor handling the Butler and Brabham case, said he will ask that Baber's sentencing be postponed until after he testifies. - That has Butler and Brabham fuming. They're using this as a tool to make Baber sing," said Joe Far-' ish, Brabham's attorneys. 'They've got the canary in the cage." Besides Baber's testimony, Castillo needs bank records from Butler and Brabham's personal apd campaign accounts. 1 million gift gets animals new hospital By Tim O'Meilia Pjilm Beach Post Staff Writer 1 WESTPALM BEACH A$l million gift from longtime board members Rolla and Kim Campbell will build a new animal hospital at the Palm Beach Zoo at DreherPark. f The hospital and research facilities are part of a $22 million redevelopment plan that begins with a rainforest exhibit and a flew two-story entry complex, which will include classrooms, offices, a restaurant and gift shop.
