Palm Beach Post, Thursday, Nov. 21, 1968-3 Emmy Show Has Become Unintentional 'Laugh-In The foreigners can plead ignorance. After all. they are staggering around in a foreign country. The Emmy people have no excuse, save perhaps a dinga-ling membership. One year they gave out close to a hundred Emmvs. HOLLYWOOD (LPI) - The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is good for almost as many laughs as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Both have awards to hand out. but the rules are changed every year. the same thing two seasons in a row. That is. if Lucille Ball wins the Emmy this year for being the best comedienne on the air. she cannot win it next year even if she continues to be the best. It's like the Big Ten refu rules assure "that every Emmy award will honor new and innovative achievements thereby answering the criticism that all too often the same people and shows were bestowed with Emmy honors." The most ridiculous of the new rules is that performers and shows will not be eligible for an Emmy after the second season on the air. Last year Milburn Stone won the award for best supporting actor in a drama (Gunsmoke!) after the show- had been on the air for a dozen years. No one deserved it more than Stone. Under the new rules his performances are automatically eliminated. Make sense? No. But then the nuts and bolts in the academy seldom do. sing to send the same football team to the Rose Bowl two years running. They want to give some of the losers a chance. Evidently the Emmy scientists feel the same way. Seymour Berns, president of the academy, says the new- Another year there were only a dozen or so winners. This year they've changed the rules again.
