The only difference about Sheila Connors is that she is the first doorwoman in the Plaza Hotel's 107-year history. The 31-year-old aspiring actress and former police officer blazed this once maleKlominated trail when she was hired during the busy holiday season. No comment from Socks on playful 'first pup' Last year, Gifford was criticized when labor activists revealed that some of her : line was produced in a Honduran sweatshop. Her-husband, Frank Gifford, later visited a grimy New York factory with checks for workers who said they weren't paid. His wife testified before Congress, attacking" sweatshop owners as "cockroaches." In the latest investigation, State Attorney Gen-; eral Dennis Vacco said conditions faced by workers : making Kathie Lee clothing and other labels in New York "resembled something out of a Charles Dickens novel." Vacco said employees at the Manhattan facto-' ries worked at times 24 hours straight and weren't, paid for one 10-week period. As many as 100 workers at the shops were being ; paid below the minimum wage of $5.15 per hour, with no overtime cheating workers out of at least , $300,000, Vacco said. State labor authorities began investigating the factories after a complaint by the Union of Needle, and Industrial Textile Employees. 'Amistad' draws some big names President Clinton and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton joined Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper Thursday night for a gala Washington screening of the new Steven Spielberg movie about the slave ship Amistad. Also attending were the director and the film's cast which includes actors Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman and Matthew McConaughey. Spielberg and his wife were to stay overnight at the White House. The movie, which opens in theaters around the country next week, tells the story of kidnapped Africans from Sierra Leone who mutinied off the coast of Cuba and were eventually able to return to their homes. Also attending the premiere was Samuel Pieh, the great great grandson of one of the men aboard the Amistad who also has a role in the film. He's a chocolate Labrador puppy, about 3 months old. Clinton friend Tony Harrington, who owns the dog, took it to the White House on Friday afternoon, and the president and the pup spent a while playing on the grounds. And that clinched it, said spokesman Joe Lock-hart. It's been five years since America had a first dog (God rest Millie's soul), and the president has been mulling this for a while, Lockhart said. The decision on this particular pup appeared impetuous, but Lockhart said the allergy-prone president did discuss it with his wife. Socks, however, had no input and has not met the playful newcomer. It's not clear when the dog will get his White House pass (or a name) and move in. Harrington is "going to take him and do some training first," Lockhart said. Like fetching golf balls? "I was thinking more basic," he said, "like not on the Oval Office rug." mii,-n:i.iYir.;.M Today's forecast T-rn I I. in 'TX'Srr ! f-TH 6430 SWA v-AX! s TODAY Mostly sunny and cool conditions.
