Randall and Klugman were in South Florida to head a new production of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys that's Broadway bound. So, it was time for Villella to do a little catching up. He gave the show a thumb up. As for memories of that episode, Villella says, "It was joke after joke on and off camera. And I got very famous after with New York cab drivers, who kept asking, 'Didn't I see you on The Odd Coupler " B Live from New York: It's Saturday afternoon (at the Met) . . . It's that time of the year again: The Texaco-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network kicks off its annual live broadcast series with Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The production, led by James Levine, features Carol Vanness and Anne Sofie von Otter, among others. In the weeks to come, the Saturday series will spotlight the familiar (Puccini's Turandol and Madama Butterfly, Verdi's R Trovatore, Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg) and the lesser-known (Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Janacek's The Makropulos Case). The schedule runs through April 18, with start times varying depending on the length of the opera. The Met broadcasts can be heard locally on WTMI-FM 93.1, WQCS-FM 88.9 and WDBF-AM 1420. B Bernstein on the block . . . Forget Princess Di's dresses and Picasso paintings. The hot items at Sotheby's next week belong to the late conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. The New York auction house will put bits and pieces of the Bernstein estate on the block on Wednesday and Thursday. Expected to fetch the highest price is a Bosendorfer grand piano, inscribed in Bernstein's own hand. Other noteworthy offerings: an autographed copy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1967 book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?-, several Japanese silk robes Bernstein used to wear after concerts; and an Al Capp cartoon of the conductor in action. Oh, and if you're in the market for a nice Picasso, Bernstein owned a 1957 lithograph that's also for sale. Proceeds are expected to reach $500,000, a portion of which will go to the Bernstein Education Through the Arts Fund (BETA). "I've played it hundreds of times, they've played it thousands," says principal violinist Mariana Sirbu, whose six years with the group qualify her as a relative newcomer. But she says boredom is not a factor: "I still think it's one of the most beautiful works of music." Sirbu describes I Musici's method as that of an overgrown string quartet. The group has no conductor, and although Sirbu is generally in charge of setting the tempo, the players function like a small team. "Everybody is doing his part and trying to match with the others," she says. But does I Musici play anything other than Italian Baroque? "We play everything," Sirbu insists, noting that the group's repertoire goes all the way to Webern and the contemporary Italian film composer Nino Rota. "It's very difficult" to pigeonhole the group, Sirbu says. B . A sitcom reunion . . . What was Miami City Ballet Artistic Director Edward Villella doing at the Coconut Grove Playhouse the other night? Visiting his old buddies Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, that's what. Close followers of The Odd Couple may recall that the New York City Ballet star once did a guest appearance on the much-beloved sitcom, with Randall (aka Felix linger) trying to steal the spotlight from Villella (playing himself) in a school performance; Klugman (aka Oscar Madison) is the unfortunate intermediary." 9 Everything Mary J.
