They're in satin-striped organdy, the color of jordan almonds, and they might upstage everything else in a ballroom except perhaps pants. Georg Stavropoulos, the transplanted Athenian known for his chiffon chitons and togas, is perhaps the last man, after Sarmi, that one would rxpect to get enthusiastic a rout pants. vests. They're straight-legged (neither clingy nor flouncy), and they come in raw silk, ribbed cotton and paisley printed silk as well as smooth and sueded leathers. Miss Sylbert is especially enamored of vests as a means of pulling an outfit together, whether it is based on pants or one of the flippy skirts that she provides for the women who still prefer to express themselves traditionally. Some look like waistcoats, some like boleros and some have an old-fashioned peplum flare around the hips. They're as essential as chains for the look of today. Sarmi's pants are delicate or dramatic, never rugged. But then the darling of the charity ball set is not likely to change his tune just because he has caught pants fever, too. He produces trouser outfits in lace or chiffon that are dreamy or drifty, gleaming with jewels or fluffy with ma- ribou. They're just about as flattering as his evening dresses, which is saying a lot for pants. Another Sarmi passion for spring is the shirtwaist dress which provides flattery without frou-frou. He likes some of them so much he signs them. The print in these is derived from his signature in endless repetitions. You don't need Z0-20 vision to read it, as yeu do Pucci'i. Designers aren't doing anything to discourage these chameleon tendencies in their spring collections. But they are managing to suggest, subtly or otherwise, that a woman can express the personality of her choice without wearing anything but pants. "Mrs. Bloomer would have approved," Bonnie Cashin remarked at the start of her show for Philip Sills. Amelia Bloomer could hardly have objected. After all, the pioneer worker for women's rights made bloomers her uniform back in the 19th century. Miss Cashin's present-day versions tend to be in leather and they're accompanied by bare-midriff tops ("I hope they'll be worn by girls with, tanned midriffs," the designer said wistfully). She shows them with all manner of capes, jackets and coats, including her "parabola" designs that are cut out in a swooping arc at the center to give a full view of the bloomers beneath. Miss Cashin likes the bloused-bloomer look so well she makes bloomer dresses, too. They're sleeveless so they can be worn as jumpers, and they tend to have belted middles. They're Miss Cashin's latest stroke for fashion freedom, and they're likely to become as classic as her loose leather-bound canvas coats. Of course, they're not the only pants she knows. She has knickers and jodhpurs and even canvas trousers with a leather apron that she advises for riding in the country or for jogging. Outside of the bloomers, which "act like a dress," she doesn't particularly recommend pants for jogging around town, except maybe on the girl with a glorious figure. A year ago, Viola Sylbert's pants for Albert Alfus would have been earmarked for the suburubs or Central Park on Sunday. The way things are going, they will probably replace miniskirts by spring in the more permissive offices. They're accompanied by dresses, jumpers, coats and I Join our Christmas Club now I....,..'' ... and you'll be wreathed in smiles next Christmas.
