Tinrn Ntwi Strykt: MEXICO CITY - The Peri-ferico is the road that girdles Mexico City and for about 11 miles of its length, along the road leading to Olympic Village, it has one thing most roads do not have, sculpture. Along the stretch called La Ruta de la Amistad, the Route of Friendship, are 19 monumental pieces of sculpture, spaced about a kilometer apart. All of this sculpture is abstract. Some of it towers over 80 feet. Many of the pieces are painted in primary colors. At night they are illuminated by floodlights and shine boldly, massively, defiantly. Some Mexicans love them. Many more detest them. Nobody can ignore them. The idea came about two years ago from Mathias Go-eritz. the sculptor, painter and architect. Goeritz is on the organizing committee of the Olympiad. Why not, he argued, symbolize the games, and also the accompanying cultural Olympics, with something big and permanent? The idea met with favor. It was decided to make it an international effort. Sculptors were approached and notified of the conditions. The sculpture had to be abstract, monumental in size and made of concrete. When the chosen sculptors submitted their models, a howl went up in some quarters. Mexico, with its tradition of mural painting and realistic art, is just beginning to enter abstractionism. The committee's choices rubbed many the wrong way. "It was a good idea, poorly done," a prominent art critic here said. "There was not enough time for the best results. The sculptures are not in the spirit of Mexico. Squares, angles, cubes, what have these to do with our traditions?" His remarks are echoed by many intellectuals, not all of them conservatives. There must have been a great deal of esthetic infighting before the models were finally approved. There also was a good deal of jockeying among countries who wanted to be represented along the Route of Friendship. The eight-lane Route of Friendship ended up with sculptures from Mexico, the United States, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Japan, Hungary. Uruguay, Italy. Belgium, Poland. Spain, Australia, Austria, The Netherlands. Israel and Morocco. From the U.S. there are works by Todd Williams. Constantino Nivolo and Herbert Bayer. Nivolo was born in Italy and Bayer in Austria, and that is how those two countries are represented. In an enterprise of this scope, the results are bound to be unequal. Some of the sculptures do not come off at all. But the level is high, and at least one piece, Jacques Moes-chal's big circle standing at Station No. 8, has achieved universal admiration. Obviously, the committee also thought a great deal of it. for it is placed on a high spot at the very entrance of Olympic Village. Moeschal. a Belgian, designed a circle with an eccentric cut-out. standing on a base. It is simple, dignified and pleasing, looms 80 feet high, and is painted dark gray. It can be maintained that all of the sculptures are, like so much abstract sculpture, pure design. No matter how successful pure design can be, no matter how skillfully its forms and colors are arranged, it tends to be divorced from humanity. But driving on the Periferico past these pieces is an impressive experience. Their very size and solidity, and the way they have been placed into the landscape, alone provide an esthetic experience. Among the more successful pieces are the interlocked elements, painted blue and green, of Willy Gutmann from Switzerland; the big curve of Clement Meadmore (Australia); the enormous green and blue striped rectangle broken by a tilted circular element, created by Helen Escobedo (Mexico); and the series of blocks piled one atop the other to form a curve, from Herbert Bayer. the idea of the Route of Friendship has been interesting town planners all over the world. Within a short time Goeritz is to go to London to discuss its implications with the architects and planners of the Covent Garden reconstruction. Everybody wants urban beauty. Monumental sculpture along major arteries is one contribution, and as much a testimony of man's spirit and ambition as automobiles and cloverleafs. The philosophy expressed in the Route of Friendship will find counterparts in other major cities of the world before many years 29 OZ.
