8 Palm Beach Post, Monday, Nov. 18, 1968 W. German Field Marshal Seeks Closer NATO Ties fashions for men and boys! style-packed, value-priced BONN (NANA) - Field Marshal Erich Von Manstein, West Germany's most famous living soldier, believes that the day of yie national army is gone and 'that Europe's defense now depends on an integrated military alliance such as NATO. Von Manstein, who has just turned 80; is skeptical about General Pe Gaulle's ability to defend France by French arms alone. He believes that France 'may yet be forced to return to NATO by the revived threat of Soviet aggression. Field Marshal Von Mans-tein's family is one of Germany's oldest and most glamorous military families. He was commissioned in 1907. in the Third Guards, the regiment of his uncle. Field Marshal Paul Von Hinden- burg. His father was a general, and his 16 nearest male ancestors were all general officers in the service of either the German Kaiser or the Russian Czar. Von Manstein served as a junior officer throughout the First World War, both as a front line soldier and a general staft officer. After the war, he was taken into the Weimar Republic's 100.000-strong Reichswehr. and in 1929 was made a member of the German General Staff. If Field Marshal Erwin Rommel were the greatest tactician of World War II, Von Manstein, with equal right, can claim to have been the last war's master strategist, the architect of some of its most fateful campaigns. It was he who planned the Ardennes drive which, in May 1940. broke through French defenses, and was the key factor in sealing the fate of the French armies. It was his planning, too, that brought the German armies some of their greatest victories in Russia. A product of the Prussian military system. Von Manstein, nevertheless, held independent views which kept him in constant conflict with Hitler. His record of opposition to the Nazis caused Konrad Adenauer to turn to Manstein for advice when West Germany's A. men's cotton knit shirts from Italy! fl.99 first chancellor began planning armed forces for the new German democracy. Manstein was Adenauer's constant behind-the-scenes military adviser, and the Bundeswehr reflects his influence. Manstein defends the role of the German army over the last 50 years. He contends that the German armed forces have been a source of stability and unity for the German nation, and that they have provided valuable national traditions. It was not the German army that involved the nation in two disastrous wars, Manstein argues, but German political leaders. "Political leaders have always misused the army," Manstein declared, "and not the other way around." The German military establishment is usually depicted as a sinister state within the German state, but Manstein offers a different assessment. "It is probably true that the German armed forces traditionally isolated themselves too much from contact with national life," Manstein agreed, "but this was not done through any conscious effort by the army to undermine the civilian authorities. "Rather, it was the tradition of the German army to stay aloof from politics, and to concentrate its energies solely on its mission of defending the nation. In retrospect, I am inclined to agree it was a mistake to isolate the armed forces from the mainstream of German life. "We now recognize that the armed services can't be hermetically sealed off from the political life of the nation. However, the question when a soldier becomes a citizen, and thereby ceases to be a soldier, is complex and one for which Long sleeve knits of the finest cotton. " Manstine believes the Allies made a mistake in disbanding the German military establishment after the First World War. He argues that had the Weimar Republic been permitted to determine the size of its forces, much of the pressure for remilitarization could have been avoided. Manstein referred to the 100.000-strength ceiling clamped on the Reichswehr by the Treaty of Versailles. Manstein believes that West German rearmament, on the whole, has been conducted with surprising success. He approves of the "citizen soldier" concept around which the Bundeswehr is built, but he warns against applying this concept so literally that the Bundeswehr's discipline and professionalism suffers. Manstein is afraid, too, that application of the citizen soldier concept involves excessive experimentation. And he is aghast at entry of the German labor movement into the military establishment. The German Trade Union ' Federation's union of public employees has received permission from the defense ministry to recruit among the Bundeswehr. and about eight thousand soldiers and several hundred officers (including three generals) have taken out union cards. West Germany's only living field marshal is also worried about the lack of public support for the German armed forces. The Bundeswehr suffers from a lackluster image, mainly because the average German continues to be hostile to military service of any type. The Bonn government's low-key approach to German rearmament also has made it difficult to whip up enthusiasm among the populace for the Bundeswehr, many of whose members complain they are treated as an inferior caste of public servants. Manstein feels in general that the Bundeswehr "citizen soldiers" would benefit from an infusion of Prussian military traditions. "The boys need something to make them snap to attention, and to be filled with pride at being a German soldier," Manstein observed. But Germany's most famous living soldier takes the view that the future security of Western Europe can be guaranteed only by supranational defense forces such as the North Atlantic Treaty B. famous casual slacks are permanent press 4.09 pre-tUlcated 7.00 - 7.SO Choose from great no-iron blends of Dacron polyester-cotton or Fortrel polyester-cot CHARLTON IIESTON and SOPHIA LOREN in ton.
