Rapidly redeveloping with an abundance of talent in midfield and on attack. Stars include Dejan Savicevic, Vladimir Jugovic and Pedrag Mijatovic. Tennis Soccer oddsmakers, have no illusions about winning the Cup. "My goal, my dream, is to get to the third round," said Sampson. "I think getting to the second round is realistic." To even make it to the second round and a likely matchup with the Netherlands, the United States probably will need 5 points (3 for a victory, 1 for a tie). So if the U.S. can't at least draw in their opener with the Germans, they'll need to beat the Yugoslavs in the finale. "If we can get a point from Germany, that'd be ideal," Sampson said. "The game against Iran we must win. Then we have to try to get a result against Yugoslavia." If Sampson had his druthers, he'd rather open with the Iranians, who were the last team to qualify and needed to come from two goals down to draw with Australia in Melbourne to do it. "Ideally, we'd have wanted the order to be Iran, Yugoslavia, and Germany," Sampson said. "But we could have had it be Germany, Yugoslavia, and Iran." The Germans, who won the Cup in 1954, 1974, and 1990 and are reigning European champions, would be tough customers whenever they popped up. Even though they barely won their qualifying group, tying four matches and struggling twice with Albania, they're likely to be in full form in June. The Yugoslavs were banned from the last Cup because of the brutal "ethnic cleansing" conflict. Budweiser to sell signboards: Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., unable to get around France's ban on alcohol advertising, said it had sold its rights to have signboards at World Cup games this summer to Casio Computer Co. Anheuser-Busch, the world's largest brewer, had been negotiating with the French government since early last year to obtain an exemption to the 1992 Evin Law, which bans tobacco and alcohol advertising and sponsorship of sports events. opposite of the science," said Ted Forsgren, executive director of CCAFlorida, Snook workshops planned: Before the Marine Fisheries Commission decides which additional restrictions to impose on the harvest of snook by recreational anglers, it plans 10 public workshops in the southern half of Florida, beginning as early as By Elizabeth Clarke Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Martina Navratilova visited Delray Beach a year ago with tales of woodworking classes and a half-finished table. It was a small, first-time project for a tennis great now using her hands to sand and varnish instead of slice and volley. A year later, that finished table sits in her bedroom and she has started making another, this one for a friend. She also recently published the third book of her mystery trilogy, called Killer Instinctmd started writing a monthly column for Conde Nast Sports for Women. "It's interesting. I'm enjoying it," Navratilova said. "I have a fabulous life." Despite the time-consuming creative endeavors, however, Navratilova has found time to prepare for this weekend's Virginia Slims Legends tournament in Delray Beach. The annual tour for former top pro players ends its season at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Team Navratilova and Chris Evert's Team Evert play for the season-ending trophy. Navratilova, who has won more singles titles than any other player, appreciates the chance to play with other strong players. Living in Aspen, Colo?, she doesn't find many high-caliber opponents except when she sees Evert, a friend and former tour rival. The two played in October when Navratilova was in town to promote the Legends. Navratilova visited the Evert Tenriis Academy in Boca Raton and loved the place and the competition. "If I was 30 years younger, that's where I would want to be," she said. "(I told the players) 'How lucky are you?' What an opportunity to hit or get coached by one of the all-time greats." As usual, one of the highlights this weekend will be the daily matchup of Evert, 42, and Navratilova, 41. They played repeatedly throughout their careers. "We are the sports rivalry," Navratilova said. "Men or women, period. Nobody played each other 80 times at the top of their profession for 13 years. Most of that time we were (ranked) one and two." This year, Navratilova leads the series 2-1, but Evert won the Delray Beach singles match last year. Uncle Sam vs. Iran and Yugoslavia (i.e., Serbia) with the whole world watching? "Maybe we can have soccer diplomacy like we had Ping-Pong diplomacy with China," U.S. Soccer Federation President Alan Rothenberg said Thursday after the United States had been matched with those two State Department headaches plus three-time champion Germany for this summer's quadrennial World Cup in France. In soccer terms, though, it wasn't the worst draw for the Americans, who reached the second round of the 1994 tournament and want to do at least that well again. "It's not the weakest group or the strongest group," said coach Steve Sampson, whose team will have to finish in the top two in its preliminary pool to advance to the round of 16. "But there are no easy games. There's more parity in this World Cup than I've ever seen." Still, some groups are decidedly more lopsided than others. The host French, who didn't qualify last time, received a dream draw with South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Denmark. Defending champion Brazil got Scotland, Norway, and Morocco. Italy, which lost the 1994 final on penalty kicks, drew Chile, Cameroon, and Austria. And Argentina was grouped with Jamaica, Japan, and Croatia, all Cup newcomers. But Holland-Belgium-Mexico-South Korea has a nasty balance to it. And Spain-Bulgaria-Nigeria-Paraguay was immediately labeled the "Group of Death." Biologists from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection say the ratio for snook has fallen to 25 percent on the east coast and to 35 percent on the west coast. Data on snook from Palm Beach and Jupiter inlets show a shortage of snook between 24 and 28 inches. Biologists don't know why. Several east coast anglers, meanwhile, have told the commission that the snook fishing has been good this year. And west coast guides have complained of a lack of large snook. By Willie Howard Palm Beach Post Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD The Marine Fisheries Commission agreed Thursday to consider additional restrictions on the harvest of snook by recreational anglers. The process will take almost a year and will include public workshops in 10 Florida cities, including Stuart and West Palm Beach. Commissioners agreed to begin the discussion by considering the following changes: Reducing the daily bag limit from two to one snook. Increasing the minimum size from the current minimum of 24 inches to 26, 28 or 30 inches.
