Art, music, food, games, dance and student-created village scenes will highlight the cultures of more than 13 Privileged Living at Affordable Priced -J, J5 By Shannon Colavecchio Palm Beach Post Staff Writer For the past few weeks, Spanish bullfighters, beautiful flamenco dancers and Picasso paintings are all 10-year-old Jeffrey McLemore has thought about. The same goes for his 27 fifth-grade classmates and fellow artists at U.B. KinseyPalmview Elementary School of the Arts in West Palm Beach. The class, led by art teacher Rose Shaw, is building a miniature Spanish village, complete with fruit and flower vendors, a bull and outdoor cafe tables for sipping cafe con leche. On Dec. 13, their village will join more than a dozen others at the first-ever Kaleidoscope '97 International Family Festival a food, music and dance showcase of the area's cultural diversity being sponsored by the city of West Palm Beach at a cost of about $41,700. Students from 10 Palm Beach County elementary and middle schools joined with local cultural organizations to build villages representing countries such as Germany, Haiti, Scotland and Africa. The city gave each school $250 for supplies, and some schools got other community donations. The students' hard work and enthusiasm also has made learning the details of far-off places fun, Shaw said. "(The project) has just made learning a lot more interesting," she said, explaining that her students have learned some Spanish, and they used books and the Internet to research Spanish artists, architecture, dance and music. The kids got involved with. . . the artistic side of a country instead of just learning where it is on a map." Kaleidoscope '97 begins with Saturday's International Tree Lighting ceremony in Centennial Square and ends with the Family Festival. i H HVA IA V I Million Dollar Clubhouse mm 1 1 - ''' 1 5 r t M4l , i i i (i i i ilk iitfi fi. rfji "1 1 I I I k( lf 111 If A W I v i I S IM I I l"H fi iff 1 EW ;i V1S IbmM t td II 11 H III 4 I- Hi -:Hi:ri & .- .mkks " m. urn m- m m jM m m mm m m mm m -m mt-l if)-; Amber Williams, public relations specialist for West Palm Beach Mayor Nancy Graham, said the mayor and her staff wanted to create a holiday event that would illustrate the religions, beliefs and customs celebrated by different groups throughout Palm Beach County. The results, she said, have gone far beyond what they hoped for. "It's brought these people (the students and cultural organizations) together. They've become friends, and they're teaching each other," Williams said. McLemore said he wishes every geography lesson was as "cool as the one he's had for Spain. "We learned about Picasso," he said. "And Spain's good because they have bullfighters and stuff.
