4B THE PALM BEACH POST FRIDAY. DECEMBER 5. 1997 Jury convicts man in fatal crash v.... -r. -Vs. , By Christine Stapleton Palm Beach Post Staff Writer WEST PALM BEACH A jury rejected Mark Snyder's claim that an epileptic seizure caused him to speed through a red light ana slam into a van last year, killing a Delray Beach mother. After nearly three hours of deliberations on Thursday, a jury convicted Snyder of manslaughter by culpable negligence and four counts of culpable negligence. "I've never been happier," said Lisa Hughes, whose sister, Regina Cassera, 37, was killed in New Arrivals! Belted "Linen" Trouser Shorts A great fitting pleated side elastic linen short with a beautiful leather belt. Colors are black, natural, turquoise, sage, banana, lilac, navy, royal, taupe, white and pink. Completely wash and dryable. Sizes 10 to 20. Reg. $32 now $24.99 Snyder's defense attorney, Mitchell Beers, called several experts who told the jury that Snyder is an epileptic who has a history of seizures. However, Snyder's condition had been so stable that his doctor told him he could drive. Snyder, who suffered a broken collarbone in the crash, had two seizures in the emergency room after the accident Blood tests showed Snyder had not been drinking. Assistant State Attorney Ellen Roberts called other witnesses to testify that they saw Snyder weaving through traffic just before running the red light "This was a very difficult case," Roberts said. With defense testimony of Snyder's epilepsy, "they had a lot of sympathy going," she said. "I think he used it as an excuse and I think the jury was smart enough to see it" Roberts had offered Snyder a plea bargain that would have required him to surrender his driver license for life and remain on probation for 15 years. Snyder faces a minimum of 14 and a maximum of 23 years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 22. Outside the courtroom, Snyder's girlfriend, Roseley Fanace, clutched a pill container that contained Snyder's anti-convulsion medicine. They wouldn't even let me give it to him," Fanace cried. This is not fair. The man had a seizure." Snyder the crash. I can nnally say 1 can be at peace with my sister." For Hughes, May 19, 1996, was the first day of her spring vacation. Hughes had just arrived from New York and was in a minivan with her sister, her sister's two young children and her brother-in-law. Hughes, who was seriously injured, has no memory of the crash. Witnesses said Snyder, 54, was heading west on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach when he drove his pickup truck at about 60 mph through the red light at Congress Avenue. it ; Iff i : ' !
