'. V. (l''1t'''l" FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1997 21A I S msl THE PALM BEACH POST Population growth may be downfall of overtaxed Earth ON Even 'poor-quality' wetland is better than a golf course (suppose there is some small comfort to American citizens in the knowledge our space scientists are gaining, as well as in the fact that it may help them understand more about Earth. I do think, however, that leading scientists should no longer ignore the fundamental cause of the deterioration of the Earth's ecology. It's obvious that there are far too many humans living on the planet. , If it is not already too late, a worldwide negative birth rate would be the answer to humanity's troubles, but we all know how impossible that would be. The United States government subsidizes the births of unwanted children and those that the parents cannot afford to rear without welfare assistance. In any case, the entire economy of the world is based on growth. It seems that we will have to wait for the catastrophe nature has in store for us, as prophesied in a few more generations. J. Rice Hughes Palm Beach Gardens Why don't the Palm Beach County commissioners quit pussyfooting around and just sell off any remaining wetlands to developers for the profit of the few (and the environmental degradation of all)? The commissioners have given Donald Trump a lease on one of the few remaining wetlands in eastern Palm Beach County. So it's one less wetland for us and our children and another golf course for Mr. Trump and his cronies, the opulent few. The membership cost is $100,000 a year. This ened or endangered." The Nature Conservancy. Well, now we know one species that is not extinct the greedy developer. And we know one more thing that money can buy! Kathleen Bloxsom Wagner Greenacres Article on penance wrong, insulting In response to the Nov. 16 Accent column "Fish on Friday is penance for penance's sake": Religion writer Steve Gushee seems misinformed on the Catholic religion. For example, fasting before communion is still reauired and freauent confes- club for the rich would use almost a half-million gallons of water per day while dumping the runoff into our L-5 Canal and back into the water supply. The county is calling part of the land (214 I f sion recommended. Mr. Gushee's comments re- rights group protests carriage rides," Nov. 14). These antiquated contraptions are accidents waiting to happen. I regularly read or hear of accidents involving horse buggies in which passengers, bystanders and the horse are injured. Surely the plaza's management can come up with a promotional ploy that doesn't involve animal exploitation and a risk to public safety. Iris Fried Boca Raton Write us money in the long run. The article offered good advice on finding an audiologist, but I would add that it's also good to ask friends who have been wearing aids for a few years whether they can recommend someone. A myth about buying a hearing aid is that it is the same as getting glasses. Not so. Of course, the audiologist tests to determine the patient's type of hearing loss, but no test can determine what kind of hearing aid andor brand to use. This depends on the audiologist's educated judgment. Donald H. McAuley Port St. Lucie Let Adelphia master cable delivery first So Florida's Public Service Commission has given Adelphia Cable permission to enter the longdistance telephone business. Good grief! Adelphia can't even deliver acceptable cable television service. For example, during the past four weeks, there hasn't been one day during which we haven't had long periods of extremely poor reception. We also have experienced blackouts every few days. Who needs this company to mess up their telephone service? Victor G. Bloede Boynton Beach Keep carriages out of people's way I'm aware of the presence of a horse and carriage at Royal Palm Plaza in Boca Raton, and I'm glad someone has spoken out against it ("Animal acres just south of Palm Beach International Airport) "poor-quality wetlands" in order to make the sweetheart deal more palatable to those who can't afford the membership fees. I suppose Mr. Trump and the commissioners would agree with early European visitors to the Everglades when they called it a useless swamp. Mr. Trump and the commissioners, like so many others in positions of power, don't care that the rest of us are here for the true wealth of Florida, its natural environment Residents of Palm Beach County should demand that the county commissioners halt this destruction of our natural wetlands for the fun and profit of the opulent few. We have enough golf courses and precious few remaining wetlands. WilvanNatta North Palm Beach So-called water managers are inept The South Florida Water Management District Board has given permission for Donald Trump to damage (read: destroy) 22 acres of Florida wetlands and draw almost a half-million gallons of water per day for his golf course. I cannot imagine anyone being so shortsighted and pea-brained in this day of ecological awareness as to allow this pillaging of our wetlands. ; " (Florida) has lost 50 percent of its wetlands, marshes and other water recharge areas. Sixty-five percent of the Everglades is gone forever. At least 32 species of native plants and animals have become extinct here; 97 more are listed as threat- Cardinal Law ramg tne cona Vatican Council also are erroneous. Offering the Mass in Latin was not done away with by the council; that came later. Mr. Gushee sounds like many who have never read the documents of the council. Jesus Christ said that some demons could be removed only by prayer and fasting. If we have humility, we realize that we are not perfect. There is joy in our faith as well; there is a balance. The comment that Cardinal Law "is the kind of religious conservative who thinks the Spanish Inquisition was enlightened evangelism" was uncalled for and insulting. Linda Martin Stuart Hearing-aid shopping is not so simple I have some points to make regarding the otherwise excellent Accent article "Listen up: Here's the lowdown on hearing aids," which suggests, "Shop around." Service is also extremely important. My Fort Pierce audiologist does not charge for follow-up service unless he has to send a hearing aid back to the factory after the warranty has expired. He also gives a full hearing test without charge. People who find such a professional may not get the aid for the cheapest price but will save The Palm Beach Post welcomes letters from readers.
