,1 10A THE PALM BEACH POST FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1997 Cold good news for citrus growers Baby Think It Over More white (dolls to be purchased Each 10-pound doll created by a Wisconsin engineer costs about $350. The dolls run on four batteries and have adjustable moods: cranky, normal or easy. When they cry, which they do at one- to four-hour intervals, the pretend parent must use a key to turn a switch in the baby's back, holding it there for as many as 35 minutes. There's a monitor to show the number of times the baby was handled roughly, the number of times the baby was left to cry for more than one minute and the total number of weepy minutes. Students keep the babies for a total of 64 hours during the weekend as part of a required ninth-grade Life Management Skills class. Healthy Start educator Jason Childs reluctantly supervises a "hot line" during the weekend for the new parents. Childs has gotten dozens of calls, sometimes at 2 a.m. or 3 a.m., from frustrated teens who simply can't stand the crying. Some tips for the cold weekend Pets especially small and short-haired breeds shouldn't be left outside in very cold or freezing weather. If you don't let your pet inside, make sure there is a place out of the wind and cold where it can sleep. Take in potted plants. For plants you cannot take in, give them extra protection by covering them with burlap or another fibrous cloth. Don't cover them with plastic because it draws heat from plants. Cold-tolerant plants that can be left outside include junipers, hollies, ligustrums. Do not put space heaters near flammable materials, such as beds and clothes. Use a good extension cord, not one that is flimsy or torn. If using kerosene heaters, open a window for ventilation. Make sure heating units that have not been used recently are grease- and dust-free before turning them on. Use appliances and heaters sparingly. A power surge can cause a blackout. COLD From 1A Lord's Place Administrator Alex Stevens said he bought extra heaters, and the Salvation Army shelter in West Palm Beach is booked through the weekend, officials said. . The American Red Cross may open "wanning sites" at its headquarters in West Palm Beach and in Boynton Beach and Belle Glade. But spokeswoman Laurie Owen said a decision will not be made until Saturday. Most fanners and agricultural officials expressed little concern about crop damage because the cold front is not expected to drag temperatures below freezing. In fact, temperatures in the 40s could be beneficial to some crops. l "Citrus actually benefits from these types of temperatures. It does nothing but make Indian River citrus taste sweeter," said Doug Bournique, executive vice president of the Indian River Citrus League in Vero Beach. , Sugar cane growers expressed more frustration with Thursday's rain than the impending cold. "The rain is causing more problems than anything else," said Barbara Miedema, public relations manager of the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative in Belle Glade. "We can't harvest sugar cane in the rain." The cold also benefits humans it helps zap mosquitoes. ties, visiting ' local churches and rnaking friends. Although Baby Think It Over has revealed an intolerance .that wouldn't benefit any of George's hard-to-place children, the program's point is to discourage teens from having sex and babies. In a 1995 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services survey, 37 percent of ninth-graders said they had sex; 1 1 percent had sex before age 13. In Martin County, 1,001 teens gave birth between 1986 and 1995. The Baby Think It Over dolls seem to be doing their job. In a recent survey at Martin County High, one. female student said, "I don't want kids. Just listening to that crying at 2:30 in the morning got me irritated." -A male student said, "Before (using the doll I didn't want a child. Now, there's no way." corded this season at Palm Beach International Airport was 49 degrees on Nov. 9. The record low for Dec. 7 was 41 degrees in 1945. Lushine said the cold front should bring temperatures on Sunday that could match that record. Warm air will bounce back on Monday but not for long with highs in the 70s. Lushine said another cold front is expected to descend during the : latter half of next week. 'They (students) aren't really concerned about race, but somebody at home is. It doesn 't have to do with a fear of their kid having a mixed-race baby. It's a prejudice-based response. The chilly air may speed the end of the medical alert issued in early October by decreasing the activity of encephalitis-carrying mosquitoes, said Palm Beach County Health Department environmental specialist Bob Gallo. Encephalitis outbreaks which occur every seven to 10 years generally die out in South Florida by the end of December when "frequent and religious cold fronts will keep knocking (mosquito counts) down until they're at zero," he said. Although it's going to get cold, the blast isn't expected to break any records, Lushine said. But it has also uncovered "something unpleasant" about Martin County's would-be parents. Childs blames it on the parents, not the students. "They aren't really concerned about race, but somebody at home is," he said. "It doesn't have to do with a fear of their kid having a mixed-race baby. It's a prejudice-based response." And it's disturbing, said Linda Gentry, a parent volunteer who assigns dolls at South Fork High School. "We just pat ourselves on the back and say we're such a progressive community, but we're not," she said. "This really has uncovered something unpleasant." The last two black dolls Gentry gave to white students all of her white dolls had been adopted came back with their "voice boxes" pulled from their backs, she said. The teens lost patience with the dolls, which cry when they're hungry or when they're tipped upside-down and handled roughly. One white teen told Gentry she wouldn't be allowed in the house with a black doll. .' In response, the Martin Coun ty Healthy Start Coalition the program's sponsor plans to buy more white baby dolls, Childs said". A dozen dolls and their maintenance will cost $3,500. The two high schools, Martin County and South Fork, have equal numbers of white and black or Hispanic . dojls now. . Black students don't have a problem taking white dolls home, although it's less likely they would have to, Gentry said. She tries subtly to match dolls with parents and avoid any racial arguments. And some white teens don't mind taking black dolls, Gentry points out, and say they'd like to be "foster parents." But usually, they prefer to take Hispanic babies first, which are a lighter brown. The situation at the high schools parallel the real-life prob lems black children have getting adopted: Black foster children are more likely to "linger in the sys tem, said Portia George, local administrator of the One Church, Qne Child program for District 3!).s Department of Children and amily Services. correction notice- In the November 30 and December 7 Horn-life preprints we incorrectly priced the Sears Twilight Express full mattress at $349.99 for the set. the correct price is $349.99 for each piece.
