Democrat and Chronicle Friday,October23,2015 METS’ WRIGHT ENDURED TOUGH TIMES TO GET TO WORLD SERIES PAGE 8D If the Section V tournaments are where champions really defend titles, it appeared Irondequoit’s football team would not get the chance. The Eagles, Class A state semifinalists in 2014, were 1-3 more than halfway through the season. And their final three games were against Wilson, Cana ndaigua and Greece Athena, playoff- bound teams. T y’Sean Sizer and Shawn Jones were among the Irondequoit juniors who showed it would be OK for the team to diversify its offense. There also was t he experience of Irondequoit’s rebound from an 0-3 start last season to draw from. So Irondequoit (4-3) is on a three- game win streak before its Section V C lass A tournament quarterfinal at G reece Athena, 2:30 p.m. Saturday. “You can’t win all the games the next Monday or Tuesday,” Irondequoit coach Dan Fichter said. “You can make the change over the course of weeks. “ To be honest, it wasn’t that bad. W e’ve got a good football team, and the kids know that.” There are a few good – or evenly- matched, if you choose – teams in the Class A tournament. Here are five t hings to watch or know when the play- o ffs begin Friday night. 1 . The seeds may be buried: Brockport (6-1) and Canandaigua (5-2), the No. 1and No. 2 seeds, lost regular-season finales to lower seeds in the Class A t ournament. No. 6 Irondequoit is the hottest team in the field. And the regular season went like this for No. 5 East Irondequoit Eastridge: two wins, loss, win, two losses and a win. 2. Does No. 1Brockport get out of t he first round? Common sense says yes, but a few of the coaches in the field would be less than shocked to see things occur in the tournament that d on’t make sense. Does Brockport (6-1) bounce back from the shock of its first loss, 21-12 to N o. 3 Athena, against No. 8 Wilson (3-4)? Wilson’s share of the Rochester City Athletic Conference title may not impress outside the league, but the Wildcats and one or two of their coaches believe the team had a chance to defeat Brockport last year in this round. T he rematch of the Blue Devils’ 17-6 w in is back at Brockport, 7 p.m. Friday. 3. How long can Spencerport wing it? It’s old, bruising and can be some- w hat confusing. Spencerport’s double wing offense goes against how football is being played today, where teams try t o spread out defenses. That is why it can be a tough offense, including plays with double handoffs, to prepare for in a week. 4. Another rematch: No. 5 East- r idge went to No. 4 Greece Arcadia in Week 3 and the Lancers’ 36-3 loss was included on a list of shocking results t hat weekend. We may see how much motivation counts for the Lancers, who scored 49 points during a lopsided win i n Week 7. 5. When Athena is hot, its hot. W hen it’s not ...: The point totals for the Greece Athena Trojans with junior Tavon Granison at quarterback in wins, including two playoff-bound opponents: 40, 34, 41, 14 and 21. The not-so-magic number is 14 in Athena’s losses to Canandaigua and I rondequoit, JAMESJ@GANNETT.COM HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL 5things t o watch in ‘A’ playoffs JAMES JOHNSON @JJDANDC LAUREN PETRACCA/@LAURENPETRACCA/ STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Daniel Harris, Ty’Sean Sizer and their Irondequoit Eagles teammates can celebrate winning three straight after a slow start. As birthdays go, I guess this qualifies a s rather special because none of my previous 52 birthdays were ever spent o ut of the United States. Given the time of year my birthday falls, I’m always doing something regarding the B ills, and today was no different. While they were practicing, the m edia took a tour of The Grove, which is w here they are staying. The place is u nreal. Check out my story and video F riday and you’ll see. Saw Kim Pegulain t he lobby. She said, “Hey Sal.” We chatted. We’re buddies. S o far I’ve stayed away from British food. Had Subway for dinner one night (don’t laugh) but then found a very good I talian restaurant within walking distance from the Marriott Wednesday. Pub time T hursday for my birthday. If I’m absent t omorrow, you’ll know why. Cheers to m e. Abirthday overseas WATFORD, England - Give Bills coach Rex Ryan credit for this: He recognized it made no s ense to lie to an international media contingent Thursday regarding the status of quarterback T yrod Taylor. “Tyrod won’t play this week,” Ryan said at the start of his press conference at the team’s h eadquarters in suburban London following a practice in which Taylor did not take part, or even appear on the field. D uring the media-viewing portion of the session Taylor was absent, and that was a clear in- dication that his knee did not respond well to all t he work he went through on Wednesday when he split the first-team reps with EJ Manuel and part icipated in the entire practice. Ryan could have waited until Friday to rule out Taylor, but there was no point in that because, a s he said, “I’m sure you guys figured it out. Tyrod did a nice job yesterday, we split the reps, but as he came back in the evening, our doctors MATT DUNHAMAP Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel passes during a practice Thursday at the Grove Hotel in Chandler’s Cross, England.
