Please call 787-2684 AWayne County woman who says she unwit- t ingly invested in a life i nsurance scam is slated t o be featured on CNBC’s A merican Greed on Friday at 10 p.m., according to the network. Carol Tonzi, 58, of Palmyra, says she’s paid close to $100,000 and counting into what amounts to a Ponzi scheme that involved the buying and selling of artificially inflated life insurance policies through the now-defunct Mutual Benefits Corp. of Fort L auderdale, Florida. Authorities allege Mutual Benefits sold investors like Tonzi $1.2 billion worth of so-called “life settlements” before the Securities and Exchange Commission shut down the firm in 2004. Thirteen p eople, including the company’s founder, have b een convicted. Dozens of investors were from Wayne County. A “life settlement,” also known as a “viati- cal,” works like this: Someone with a life insurance policy on them- s elves cashes out early, r eceiving a settlement that’s less than the value of the policy. The policy is then bought by an investor, who pays the pre- m iums until the person d ies and pockets the benefit paid by the insurance company. It’s a risky game that was made riskier when M utual Benefits hired a c rooked doctor to write l etters downgrading the life expectancy of policyholders to entice investors. That doctor is serving a 10-year-prison term. I n Tonzi’s case, she s aid her accountant sank $ 51,700 in 2003 into part ial ownership of a $5 million policy for an elderly woman without Tonzi’s knowledge. When Tonzi learned of the investment, she said, she was told that she would see a return of $82,720 in five years. Today, that elderly woman is thought to be 95 years old and Tonzi is still paying premiums. “They tell me that w hen it matures I will get $102,000,” Tonzi said. “Right now I’m about even. Any future premiums and I’ll just be going backwards.” Tonzi has joined dozens of Wayne County residents in suing their acc ountant, Richard Nichols, in state court, alleg- i ng negligent advice. Nichols has denied any wrongdoing and the case is pending. J ames Foley, the lawyer representing Tonzi and the other plaintiffs, said many investors lost their money because t hey were unable to af- f ord to keep paying premiums. “There is the potentiality of a payoff for those who continue to pay,” Fol ey said. “But I have abso- l utely no confidence at all on the information indicating the age of these policyholders. My guess is a lot of people are much y ounger than they were p rojected.” PROVIDED B Y CNBC Carol Tonzi of Wayne C ounty, o n CNBC’s American G reed, a iring Friday. Insurance scam investor on TV’s American Greed DAVID ANDREATTA @DAVID_ANDREATTA ARochester man was indicted by a Monroe County grand jury on c harges of second-degree murder. Jodeci M. Sinclair, 23, is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m. Friday in front of Monroe County Court Judge Victoria Argento. He is also facing two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony. Sinclair is accused of fatally shooting Tyrone Snowden,24, on Ernst Street in May. S nowden, who was shot in the leg, died two w eeks later from his injuries. W CLEVELAND WILL CLEVELAND @WILLCLEVELAND13 Jodeci Sinclair Rochester man indicted o n murder, gun charges The City of Rochester will conduct an anonymous gun “buyback’’ next month, an effort to remove illegal guns from the streets and falling into the hands of criminals. The limit is $300 in cards per person. The buyback is part of Rochester’s renewed commitment to reducing gun violence, Mayor Lovely Warren’s office said in a news release.
