The Palm Beach Post THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1997 SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTIOtf I i ff.K : ir.M. j r ' r TVrri,r.lp. DRIVEWAYS Contents prepared by the Marketing Department Suzuki Sidekick's price and looks draw attention V t'. The steering is responsive, and Suzuki, the first to introduce a subcompact sport-utility vehicle, remains committed to that class. In 1985, Suzuki introduced the Samurai to the United States, then followed it in 1988 with the two-door Sidekick. Sidekick's size make it! a winner in tight quarters. 7T Hmme in thp rpar. Although the Sidekick must contend with Toyota's RAV4 and Honda's CR-V, the Sidekick is still a popular choice. : Price is one of the Sidekick's most attractive features, with the base twooor version still priced at $13,000. For versions that compete more directly with new entries in the class, however, the Sidekick no longer has a significant price advantage. : The four-door Sport JLX with automatic transmission that I recently drove carried a sticker price of $20,399. This still is much less than any comparably equipped Compact SUV, and that's what keeps it in the hunt. This year will be the last for this generation Sidekick. A redesigned version will be introduced tachometer; cruise control; dual air bags; air conditioning; Alpin motor pulls the Sidekick to 60 miles-per-hour in just over 13 seconds. The four-speed automatic is included in the base price, the 4-speed automatic-equipped JLX runs about $1,000 more than the manual transmission version. Although the automatic loses some of the get-up-and-go in comparison to a stick shift, drivers won't notice much difference. The automatic transmission and engine are well-matched, resulting in fairly smooth shifts. Losing only a mile or so in fuel economy in city and highway driving from 5-speed-equipped versions, the automatic-equipped Sport has an EPA rating of 21 mpg city24 mpg highway. The Sidekick is truck-like in its handling and shouldn't be expected to tackle curves with the stability of a lower-slung sedan. This is a tall vehicle with a higher in 1999. It will be more rounded and more intimidating in its styling. For now, the somewhat squarish generation cuts a hardy profile. With its contrasting lower-body cladding, the Sidekick is both handsome and rugged looking. The rear-mounted full-size spare tire is attached to the rear door. A 1.8-liter, 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine powers the Sport. Delivering 120 horsepower with a peak torque of 114 . foot-pounds, this center of gravity. Body roll is evident in the turns at higher speeds. The steering is responsive, and Sidekick's size make it a winner in tight quarters. This also is true when driving off-road. The Sidekick can go some places where larger SUVs simply can't. The braking system is power-assisted and monitored by standard ABS, using discs up front and audio system with stereocassett 6040 fold-down rear seat; an power windows and locks.
