Palm Beach Post, Friday, Nov. 15, 196821 Medium-Sized Food Chains Report High Profits WASHINGTON (ITU The nation's l)iKK''s' to'"' '"'''' chains arc not as profitable as medium sird and smaller chains, an indusirv-sponsond study indicates. The study of costs and profits in the retail tood industry was made b Cornell University economists Karl Broun and Robert Day. The report, 1 ith in the annual series, was financed by a grant from the National Association of food chains. The economists found earnings ot M food chains in the l7-68 fiscal year averaged 9.2 per cent of net worth. But there were substantial differences among chains of dilleren I sizes. Karnings for retail food store firms with sales between SSI million and SUM) million annually were repeated at VI. .ib' per cent. Smaller chains with sales under $20 million annually ranked second with average after-tax earnings of 10.S2 percent of net worth. At the bottom were big chains with sales over Sinn million and earnings of 8.W percent of net worth. A similar pattern emerged from a study of earnings on each sales dollars. Medium-sized chains with sales in the S20-S100 million range emerged as the leading money makers. For all food chains combined, the report said operat ing profits before taxes dropped in W67-68 to 0.49 cents on each sales dollar, the lowest level in nine years. But for medium-sized chains, operating profits in 1167 68 were 0.86 cents a dollar compared with 0.45 cents for the biggest chains. Small chains ranked between the two other groups with an operating profit of 0.69 cents per sales dollar. The report showed that operating profits of s -nail and medium chains increased over 1966-67 figures while the figure for the biggest chains declined. Another economic measure net earnings alter taxes also followed the same pat tern. Karnings of the biggest chains declined to 0.97 cents per sales dollar, the lowest level in a dozen years. But after-tax earnings of medium-sized chains rose in the 1967-68 year to 1.21 cents while earnings of small chains also rose slightly to 0.98 cents per sales dollar. Gross margins the difference between the cost of groceries and other goods and the price paid by consumers also declined in 1967-68 for the biggest chains.
