THE PALM BEACH POST THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4. 1997 3C Vikings' Johnson out for rest of season PACK UP AND GO You don't have to go far to find great vacation ideas that'll get you packing. Just go to the Travel section in this Sunday's Palm Beach Post. mm Tonight's game TEAMS: Tennessee at Cincinnati TIME: 8 p.m. TV: ESPN. BUZZWORD: "Porous" DETAILS: The Bengals allow 153.8 rushing yards a game, worst in the NFL. The Oilers are 5-2 when RB Eddie George rushes for 100 yards. And QB Steve McNair leads all quarterbacks with 518 rushing yards, averaging twice as many yards per carry (6.4) as Miami RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar (3.19). LINE: Oilers by 2Vi. PREDICTION: Bengals win but only if Boomer Esiason plays middle linebacker. OILERS 27-17. Palm Beach Post Wirt Services Brad Johnson's season ended Wednesday when surgery was recommended for a herniated disk in his neck. Johnson, who this season led the Minnesota Vikings to their longest winning streak in 22 years, will have a pea-sized portion of the injured disk removed this morning. "I know I need surgery and now is the best time to do it," Johnson said in a statement. "The doctors say I'll have full strength in six to eight weeks and no problems in the future. I'm looking forward to being back next year." NFL The bulge has caused weakness in his throwing hand, a condition that has worsened steadily since he first woke up with pain in his neck be ore Monday's 27-11 loss to the Green Bay Packers. H New York Jets: Signed offensive tackle Kerry Jenkins from the Chicago Bears practice squad. Jenkins, 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, signed with Chicago as a rookie free agent out of Troy State in April. He was assigned to the Bears' practice squad in August. To make room for Jenkins on the roster, the Jets waived linebacker Chris Wing, who had played in two games on special teams. San Francisco 49ers: Denise DeBar-tolo York took over after the resipation of her brother as head of the 49ers. York, the younger sister of Eddie DeBar-tolo, has been chairwoman of the Edward J. DeBartolo Corp. since her father's death in December 1994. She took over Tuesday as chairwoman of the 49ers after reports her brother could be indicted on gambling fraud charges in Louisiana. Carmen Policy will remain president of the 49ers and becomes a minority partner. York follows St. Louis Rams owner Georgia Fron-tiere as the second female team owner in the NFL. Overshadowed by the scrutiny on DeBartolo was the return of Jerry Rice, who resumed practicing for the first time since a serious knee injury in the Aug. 31 season opener. Rice, who won't play this week but hopes to return against Denver on Dec. 15, said he's in a position now to help them do that. "I'm doing OK," he said. "I feel like this is really going to pay off for me. I know what this knee is capable of doing. Now I've got to go out and prove it for the coaches and doctors." and much more! The 49ers were near their own end zone when officials blew the play dead as the ball was snapped. Unable to hear the whistle, Davis came in from Young's blind side and delivered a jolting blow as the quarterback relaxed and stopped his motion. Officials immediately assessed a 15-yard penalty. "I didn't get fined for not hearing the whistle," Davis said. "I got fined for hitting the guy with the crown of the helmet. They were back Sunday when the Vikings (8-5) try to snap a three-game losing streak with a win at San Francisco. Cunningham played in three Pro Bowls with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he sat out all of 1996 and hadn't played this season until replacing Johnson with eight minutes left in Monday night's game. Kansas City Chiefs: For the third time this season, the NFL has punished a member of the Kansas City defense, fining linebacker Anthony Davis $7,500 for a hit on San Francisco quarterback Steve Young. "It's however I determine it, and it's not public policy," Johnson said. Past is past to Johnson Johnson has always taken pride in his own creed that he's "very, very consistent ... I treat everybody differently." He said Perrler Jouet Grand Brut ........ Moet & Chandon White Star Pommery Brut Royals .. "There's nothing else he has to do to comply with anything," Weinstein said, "as long as he stays out of trouble." To play, he must stay in shape. Johnson noted Phillips came in at 228 pounds, but only 6 percent body fat. "If you're fining people on a daily basis for losing weight, I'd be in trouble," Johnson said, eluding to reports that many of Phillips' team fines were weight-related. "I'm trying to lose 10 pounds." John Gamble, the Dolphins' strength and conditioning coach, likes what he sees so far. "If you ask a young man like him to lose weight, he loses muscle, and with that strength and power," Gamble said. "I know he will do well in the program. It's a blessing we don't have a lot of problem players, and he will see other players working hard. We have to make him feel good first thing, as a person and an athlete." How will other players feel about him? Johnson likes to create controversy when the team is winning, but at the same time abhors schedule deviations. Is this a distraction? Or can guys relate? "A lot more guys than me and Lawrence Phillips have had second chances," Potts said. "Guys you don't even know about." Noteworthy: Starting strong safety Shawn Wooden has a muscle strain in his forearm, and starting cornerback Sam Madison was limited in practice by a sore ankle. Consequently, the Dolphins won't be able to determine whether anyone replaces George Teague in the nickel package until later in the week. DOLPHINS From 1C only get so many times to make a big play. If you don't, you're out of here. And that's cool." Is this all cool with Abdul-Jabbar, who was proclaimed the "starting running back" by Johnson? Phillips said "Karim is doing a good job, and I'm here to help him out." Abdul-Jabbar never entered the locker room during the interview period. Johnson and running backs coach Kippy Brown both said they weren't particularly concerned with the players' feelings. "When your chance comes up, you've got to be ready," Brown said. "These guys are not going to back down from competition. If Lawrence Phillips does anything, ', it'll raise the level of play for the other guys." Johnson said he "made a couple of comments to some of the ' guys, but they understand this is a very competitive business." Then ' he rattled off the names of new additions Potts, and Brett Perri-man. "Our team changes on a weekly basis, and sometimes on a daily basis," Johnson said. "So they are accustomed to change. Change is part of football. If we had a Super Bowl championship team, I'd still be looking to upgrade our talent." Johnson again made no assurances that this reclamation project would work. He repeated that "a lot of things being said are highly, highly exaggerated." Johnson is a man who makes his own discoveries and, after conducting exhaustive research on Phillips, determined this course. "Nothing ever keeps me from looking at anybody," Johnson said. Translation: Phillips has failed elsewhere, but Johnson won't give up until Phillips fails him. Johnson, in fact, said earlier in the week that he expected the worst on the background check and was not "by any means defending Lawrence Phillips." Good thing. There is no defense for what Phillips has done away from the field. He has been abusive and threatening and destructive. But what matters most to Johnson, who, by the way, holds a degree in psychology from the University of Arkansas, is the scale of risk vs. reward. By signing Phillips to a contract that minimizes Miami's risk (financial and otherwise) while maximizing the Dolphins' potential reward (an improved running game), Johnson has given Miami a chance to be a better team. "He's a big back who can run fast," Johnson said. Don't kid yourself. There is nothing more to the Dolphins' signing of Lawrence Phillips than that. ParranoAgedGouda..
