Palm Bemii Post Wire Services Endicott Mr. Peabody, the scion of two old American families who served just one term in a major elective office but ran frequently for others and led a quixotic campaign to elevate the importance of the vice presidency, died Tuesday at his home in Hollis, N.H,at77. The cause was leukemia, his son, Robert, said. Mr. Peabody came of age at a time when most people of his social class in Massachusetts were rock-ribbed Republicans, but he was a liberal Democrat. It was as a Democrat that he won his only major election: In 1962 he was elected to a two-year term as governor of Massachusetts. In 1964 he was defeated in the Democratic primary by his own lieutenant governor, Francis Bel-lotti. Mr. Peabody was singularly unsuccessful in reforming the way the political parties choose their candidates for vice president. Mr. Peabody's contention was that the party, not the presidential nominee, should choose the vice-presidential candidate. Mr. Peabody was a direct descendant of John Endicott, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the state's first colonial governor. After graduating from the Groton School in 1938, Mr. Peabody entered Harvard College, where he was a lineman on the football team and was named an All-America in 1941. Before President Harry Tru The Derby iua lot. ;q. rt. 3 Bedroom, 2 Bath, 2 Car Garage man ordered the integration of the armed services, Mr. Peabody led a successful campaign to desegregate the Massachusetts National Guard. He was elected to a local office in Cambridge, Mass., in 1955 but was defeated in races for attorney ' general in 1956 and 1958, for governor in 1960 and for the U.S. Senate in 1966, all in Massachu- : setts. After moving to New Hampshire, he lost a race for the Senate in 1986 and the state Leg- 1 islarure in 1992. Pioneer pilot W. Addems ATHERTON, Calif. - Avia- '; tion pioneer Walter Addems, whose pilot license was signed by Orville Wright, died Nov. 21 of pneumonia. He was 98. Mr. Addems was a member of the Early Birds, pilots who flew solo before Dec. 17, 1917, the 13th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight. The last surviving member of the group is George Grundy, 99, who lives in Leesburg, according to aviation historian Carol Osborne. Author George Ferguson COLUMBUS, Ohio -George Wright Ferguson, whose guidebooks helped countless Americans travel Europe by rail, died Sunday of complications from two aortic aneurysms and strokes. He was 77. He and his wife, La Verne, co-wrote Europe by Email, How to ' Travel Europe by Train, now in its 22nd edition, and Britain By Brit-Rain, now in its 14th edition. 0- TVWbtne AWorUdluOvn from in a 1 FUNERAL NOTICES $210,700 gift to finance traveling Lung Mobile Thanks to a $210,700 donation from the Quantum Foundation, a nonprofit Palm Beach County organization, the American Lung Association of Southeast Florida is getting a new set of wheels a 30-foot Lung Mobile.
