LAFFLER NEW YORK (UPI) Like many of the young musical groups, The Sandpipers have built up a following who will buy their records as long as they continue to make them. However, The Sandpipers stand apart from most groups Jn that they avoid sound gimmickry and the psychedelic Innovations and aberrations that are prerequisites for some audiences. Thus The Sandpipers rely strictly on undisguised musicianship and imaginative arrangements to maintain their popularity. "Softly," the name of one of their recent albums, is perhaps the best word to describe their way of making music. And although The Sandpipers have a strong appeal ' among today's youth, it is safe to say they would have been extremely popular one, two and three generations ago. Their latest recording, "The Sandpipers Spanish Album," (A&M SP 4159), is an excellent selection of 12 numbers presented in a soothing South of the Border style even though at least three tunes originated in the cerebrations of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. There Is an interesting and nostalgic soliloquy In "C'uando Sail de Cuba," and their presentation of "Spanish Eyes" shows they can put freshness Into a piece of music that has been played by various artists so many times that It has become something of a "standard." Their previous albums, "Softly," which features an elegant arrangement of "Love Is Blue," is now available on reel-to-reel tape (A&M AMX 147), an Ampex tape release. Selected Singles "Zor-ba! " by Claus Ogerman (Capitol P-2.I13). "A Man, A Horse And A Gun" by Henry Manclnl (RCA Victor 47-9654), "The Hurt Is Just Beginning" by Mary Love (Josie 45-999), "Reach Out" by Ox-Bow Incident (Smash S21H9), "Kentucky Woman" by Deep Purple (TetragrammatonT-ir)8). Tape Deck "In My Own Dream" by Paul Butterfleld Blues Band features some fine organ work bv Al Kooper (El-ektra EKX 4025), an Ampex reel-to-reel tape, Eight-track: "High Blues Pressure" by Freddie Hubbard (Atlantic ALM 8501) is a sequence of good jazzy Instrumentations featuring solo takes on trumpet, trombone, sax, piano and percussion. 013 c 'Super fb!
