In this year in which chickens, moose, gorillas, iguanas, turtles For kids: Animated version of 'Night Before Christmas' Even the holiday classic The Nutcracker has got to - have a gimmick. Enter the Christmas tree. By Charles Passy Palm Beach Post Arts Writer When Miami City Ballet - brings back its 8-year-old production of The Nutcracker to the Kra-vis Center starting Thursday, the big new attraction won't be some chipper-faced ballerina who's just " joined the company. Instead, it will be a Christmas tree. ; ; In the rarefied world of ballet, The Nutcracker is the one production that consistently aims its ap- . peal to the masses, the folks who wouldn't know that grand jete is merely a fancy term for big jump. . And as P.T. Barnum might have put it, to draw a crowd, you gotta have a gimmick. The Christmas tree is The Nutcracker's gimmick. In the ballet's key scene, a girl watches her small world become terrifyingly larger than life. The tree grows and so does everything else. ; Never mind that in the E.T.A. Hoffmann story the ballet is based upon, the girl actually shrinks to the level of her toys, r or the effect to work theatrically, it's . easier to think big. So, the tree " ; typically grows from 10 to 30 feet, - ; all in 60 seconds or less, accompa- - . nied by the romantic strains of . Tchaikovsky. t Trying to grow a big tree - - Every ballet company search- es for the best approach to " "grow" its tree. The New York ' City Ballet uses a trap door to let its emerge from underneath the - stage. Community ballet compa-' - nies favor simpler, more cost-ef-' fective approaches. "You should see Pacific Northwest Ballet's tree," says . Miami City Ballet Technical Director Richard Carter. "It was ' done by Boeing Aircraft. It's sick ening because it s so perfect. Carter knows a few things ' about Nutcracker trees, having made his way through the ranks since starting as a dancer with the , San Francisco Ballet several years ; ago. It was thus with a mixture of - fear and joy that he greeted Artis-.. tic Director Edward Villella's decision to build a new tree this . ' season at a price of approximately $35,000. . Not that the old tree didn't work. It's just that it was designed in the company's pre-Kra-. - vis and Broward Center era, ; when smaller spaces with less backstage capacity were the ' norm. To go along with the new theaters, Villella wanted an effect "that looked more three-dimensional: The'previous tree was simply a flat, triangular piece of . scenery that unfurled like an accordion. . Now, Villella has a tree that's - a brilliant feat of engineering it : works something like a collapsible .' wedding cake and looks just as impressive. The exterior is black " velour, which highlights the 350 or so fabric ornaments that are . attached. There are even strobe ; 1 lights imbedded in the material. . The tree typically grows from 10 to 30 feet, all in 60 seconds or less, accompanied by the romantic strains of Tchaikovsky. By contrast, Ballet Florida is sticking with its 6-year-old tree for its Kravis Nutcracker production, which bows on Dec. 23. It functions more along the accordion principal, but comes with plenty of its own bells and whistles, including approximately 300 plastic ornaments and 200 lights. Even more special is the subtle way the backdrop changes, moving downward to accentuate the tree's growth. The effect's total price tag? Close to $30,000. Keeping tree glitch-free Both companies go through elaborate technical rehearsals to make sure the tree scene works . . . . '. -'r&l 9 f IV t it according to plan. AH it takes is one slight miscue for the tree to get stuck. Carter recalls a San Francisco Ballet performance where a cable snapped and the tree came crashing down. "They stopped the show," he says. Of course, the tree is not The . Nutcracker's only effect. Most productions also feature snow and flying sleds, Miami City Ballet and Ballet Florida's included. And if you think the possibilities are , endless when it comes to trees, wait until you hear Ballet Florida Production Manager Albert Mathers talk about snow. "You can use Styrofoam or soap suds or dried potato flakes," he says. "There are as many different types of snow as you can ; imagine." But don't expect Mathers to reveal exactly what Ballet Florida uses. Or for that matter, how the company flies its sled. In the competitive world of ballet, such details are often considered classified information. Not to mention that giving the secret away can spoil it for the audience. "You don't want to break it down so much that you lose the magic," he says.
