Beni said staging the party was like staging an opera, and he should know. L'Etoile was filled with sound and color, sopranos, mezzos, tenors, baritones and prima donnas. Mrs. John R. Drexel 3d made the grandest entrance. She arrived just as the doors were closing at 1:30 a.m., kissed everybody hello and goodby at the same time and whisked off to bed. She was late because she's been helping Leonard Bernstein celebrate his birthday at the Plaza after the gala performance of his musical, "Candide." Mrs. Gilbert Miller arrived bundled in mink to greet Lady Ogilvy, her London chum. Under the fur, Kitty Miller was wearing red and gold brocade. She had played canasta in it earlier at the big successful JOB (Just One Break) card party at the Pierre. Alexander and Fiona's favorite hook for public outings is the Grand Pavois on the Left Bank which is built like a shop (ah, shades of daddy) and has sneaky booths that are almost private dining rooms (ah, shades of pull-down-the-shad-es). Victoria Leiter (she's the stunning young daughter of the very social Mrs. Oates Leiter of Washington and Newport) and George Butler, who were to have been married in Washington a few days before Christmas, have postponed the wedding until spring.
