Banned from practice and team facilities Tuesday, Latrell Sprewell was in jeopardy of having his four-year, $32 million NBA contract terminated following an attack on coach P.J. Carlesimo. The three-time AU-Star and leading scorer for the Golden State Warriors was suspended without pay for 10 games after two confrontations with Carlesimo at practice Monday. During the first, Sprewell put his hands around the coach's throat and reportedly threatened to "kill" him; during the second, 20 minutes later, he landed a glancing punch to Carlesimo's neck. In a letter to Sprewell informing him of the suspension, the team said it reserved the right to terminate his contract under Section 16 of the Uniform Player Contract, which says players must "conform to standards of good citizenship and good moral character" and prohibits "engaging in acts of moral turpitude." Sprewell was in Oakland on Tuesday and was unavailable for comment. His agent, Arn Tellem, did not return phone calls. The New York Post, citing sources at practice, said Sprewell put a stranglehold on Carlesimo and quoted the player as saying: "I'm going to kill you. You better get me off this team, or that's what I'm going to do." Several players and assistant coaches separated the two, the paper said. Sprewell returned to the gym 20 minutes later, and landed a glancing punch to the coach's head. After the second altercation was broken up, Sprewell went to St. Jean's office and found him speaking to Tellem. Sprewell grabbed the phone and told Tellem to "get me out of Here today." Rod Thorn, the NBA executive in charge of disciplinary matters, and Bill Hunter, executive director of the players' union, both said their agencies would investigate the incident. When Carlesimo told him to be quiet, Sprewell called the coach a "joke," using a profanity as an adjective. NOV. 11: Carlesimo tried to speak to Sprewell during practice but the player ignored him and was thrown out of practice. B NOV. 12: Brian Shaw replaced Sprewell in the starting lineup against the Detroit Pistons. Dr. Fred Bove, the team cardiologist, said the procedure was successful. Blood-thinning medicine will keep Coleman out until at least Dec. 15, but he will be able to return to light cardiovascular exercise, including running on a treadmill, riding an exercise bike and shooting. . . . Shaquille O'Neal will miss more games than originally expected because of the abdominal strain that has hampered him since the start of training camp two months ago. LATE MONDAY BJazz 100, Nets 95: Karl Malone scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as host Utah fought off New Jersey for its fifth straight win. The Associated Press SAN ANTONIO David Robinson and Tim Duncan scored 23 points apiece to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a come-from-behind 90-84 victory against the New York Knicks on Tuesday night. It was the sixth loss of the season for the Knicks, who have blown fourth-quarter leads in all of their defeats. Robinson added 14 rebounds and five blocks, and Duncan had 13 rebounds to go along with his career-high in points. Vinny Del Negro added a season-high 16 points for San Antonio, which won despite shooting 25-of-45 at the free throw line. Patrick Ewing scored 13 of New York's 15 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds. B Wizards 95, SuperSonics 78: It could have been the change of scenery, the presence of President Bill Clinton or the noise created by the sellout crowd at the new MCI Center. Whatever the reason, the Washington Wizards finally won a home game Tuesday night, opening their new $200 million arena with a 95-78 victory that snapped the Seattle SuperSonics' seven-game winning streak. "You go through a couple of losing seasons ... and situations evolve like it did with PJ. and Spree. Losing is a part of this game. It's just how you deal with it. I think it was dealt with the wrong way." j Riley said "there's no way" the Heat will try to acquire Sprewell, who has been the subject of trade rumors since last year, but it has nothing to do with Monday's attack, j "He makes $7.5 million so you have fo trade like-salaries and anytime you give up those type of salaries you have to give up key, core players," Riley said. "It's common knowledge around the league that he's available. It's a question of whether you can make the numbers work." B Heat have Iverson's number: The Heat owned Allen Iverson in three games last season. Iverson, the 1996 NBA Rookie of the Year, shot 7-of-43 (16 percent) from the field against the Heat and was held to 10.3 points per game. I Further, the 76ers' point guard was limited to 16 assists and committed 1 turnovers. B Noteworthy: Mourning said he underwent X-rays on his surgically repaired left knee on Monday and was told that he' "a week or two ahead of schedule." . . . Riley said he doesn't like the Heat's current run of four games in 12 days. "I really dislike this much time off," Riley said. "If you're playing every other day, even back to back, guys are more in tune and more ready. A lot of days off gets you soft." i HEAT From 1C it. I'm just letting it be known." Hardaway was then asked a couple of questions regarding the Philadelphia 76ers, the Heat's opponent tonight in Miami Arena, before the subject got back to Sprewell. "I'm not answering questions about none of that," Hardaway said tersely. "None of it, man. I'm leaving that situation alone." When that response was followed by a question that began, "At any level, have you ever gotten so mad with a coach that you wanted to . . . ," Hardaway turned around and walked away. Other Heat players and coaches were somewhat more open to discussing the Sprewell matter. "I don't know the facts of it . . . why it happened or why it occurred, but obviously I don't think there's a place for that," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "I don't know what triggered it. They've been having a frustrating year and frustrations get to the point where things boil over." Asked if he ever had a physical confrontation with a player, Riley said, "No, (but) probably a lot of guys would like to do it." Injured Heat center Alonzo Mourning said Golden State's 1-13 start following last season's 30-52 record was the likely root of Monday's confrontation between Sprewell and Carlesimo.
