After two lunar loops, the pilots will adjust their orbit to a circular path 69 miles high. Early Christmas morning, Apollo 8 will fire its main propulsion engine to break free of moon's gravitational pull and begin the 58-hour flight back to earth. The maneuver sending Apollo 8 back to earth from lunar orbit is the most critical of the entire mission. If Apollo's main engine failed, the astronauts would be stranded in orbit around the moon. "Once in lunar orbit, it's got to work to get us out," Phillips said. He acknowledged that a moon flight is more risky than an earth orbital mission, primarily because it would take up to three days for a crippled ship to get back home on a voyage to the moon. But Paine said the risks are "within the normal hazards of test pilots flying experimental craft." Man Held On Charges Of Break-Ins Charles Gibbs, 37, of 740 SW Ave. B Place, Belle Glade, was being held Tuesday night In Palm Beach County Jail to answer charges of breaking and entering and petty larceny. Gibbs was Jailed Tuesday after he was fined $75 or 15 days by Judge Beatrice Fitter-er in West Palm Beach Municipal Court on a charge of vagrancy by night prowling. He was arrested earlier by Patrolman F. R. Smith and charged with breakins at Had-ley Tire Service, 1900 N. Dixie, and Thrifty Paint and Body Shop, 1905 N. Dixie, and an attempted breakln at Sims Pharmacy, 1830 N.Dixie. Cora Elizabeth Canary, 79, of 1425 N. Federal Highway, Lake Worth, charged with shoplifting 84 cents worth of merchandise at Kings Department Store on S. Dixie, forfeited her $50 bond. Arnett King Jr., 27, of 501 3rd St., West Palm Beach, had his case postponed one year. CLASSIFIED INDEX 1. Announcements 1- 02 thru 1-24 2. Business Services 2- 05 thru 2-46 3. Apollo 8 astronauts on a historic Christmas flight around the moor, shaving up to three months off the lunar landing timetable. The daring lunar orbit reconnaissance run will begin Dec. 21 and end six days and four hours later, with a Pacific Ocean splashdown after man's fastest return to earth's at-mopshere. Astronauts Frank Borman, 40, James Lovell, 40, and William Anders, 35, plan to circle the moon 10 times, blazing the trail for the landing of Americans on the pock-marked lunar surface as early as next July. "We've been training very hard for this flight and we're happy that the performance of Apollo 7 and other considerations that led to this decision permit us to go," said Apollo 8 commander Borman. He and Lovell are Gemini spaceflight veterans. The pilots were practicing in a spacecraft trainer at the moonport when Dr. Thomas Paine, acting administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the decision in Washington. "After a careful and thorough examination of all systems and the risks and benefits involved in each of the mission alternatives, we have concluded that we are ready to fly this advanced mission around the moon," Paine said at the start of a three-hour briefing. By sending Apollo 8 to the moon instead of having it repeat the earth orbital flight of Apollo 7, NASA will be able to test the moonship in a lunar environment ahead of schedule and increase the chances for success on the initial landing attempt. The astronauts will beam back to earth live telecasts of the moon from as close as 69 miles. Apollo 8 will be launched by the first of the giant Saturn 5 moon rockets to be manned. The Saturn 5 is five times as powerful, and twice as big, as the Satum IB that orbited Apollo 7 astronauts Walter Sehirra, Donn Eisele and Wal-terCunninghamOct. 11. The plan calls for Apollo 8 to circle earth twice and then use the top stage of the Saturn 5 to give the astronauts the acceleration needed to coast the 250,000 miles to the moon. Friday in Lehigh Acres. Board chairman Robert V. Padrlck of Fort Pierce termed the proposed transportation route "an abominable proposal." The route, proposed by the State Road Dept. to give access io a new Dade-Collier County airport which has not yet been constructed, would cross the middle of Conservation Area 3, the FCD's largest conservation area. Conservation Area 3 extends from the Palm Beach-Broward County line south to Tamiami Trail and covers approximately 914 square miles.
