Then, almost sobbing, she added: "There are 12,000 children starving to death everyday over there (Biafra). What's the matter with the United States what's the matter with the people? Doesn't anyone care?" The truth is, the American people do care. They have opened their hearts for Biafra ' and their pocketbooks, also. In fact, officials of combined Catholic-Protestant Biafran relief societies say U.S. compassion has been unprecedented. Rocco Sacci, public information director of the Catholic Relief Services, says: "The response from Americans is overwhelming. People In our organization say they can't remember when so much was ' given so fast." The Protestant counterpart, Church World Service, agrees. A spokesman there says that of all the aid currently being given to Biafra, over one-third is being donated by the people of the United States. Latest figures by both groups Indicate that more 'ban $.'1 million worth of U.S. nediclne, food and critical material has been airlifted to Biafra since August. That's nearly 1.5 million pounds of relief. Moreover, authorities feel the U.S. donations would be even greater to date were it not for public confusion concerning the Nigerian war. Relief agency authorities say that many Americans have held back contributions because they wrongly believe such aid cannot get into blockaded war areas. The donations have come from Individuals or small, localized collection groups. Some large foundations have contributed (up to $25,000), but with much less frequency than private citizens. At the Catholic Relief Services offices, 65 floors up the Empire State Building, the contributions pour In daily. Secretaries have recorded donations from grade school A Truly Spectacular Value! One youngster, Jean-Pierre Ruiz of Jackson Heights, N.Y., sent in $5 with this explanation: "I enclose the money my brother and I earned from a Kool-Aid drive and the sale of bottles." Another donor, a woman from St. Louis, sent In $12 that she had saved by "filling up jars around the house with pennies." She said she had been planning to get a new coat, but it didn't seem Important any more. Another donation, from the men of Hahn Air Force Base, N.Y., Included a check for $254,62 and the written hope It would "relieve the suffering." Says a CRS worker: "It's all been very wonderful. One day a woman walked Into the office with her child. And, while the boy waited, she Just sat down at a desk and wrote us out a check for $1,000." Nobody at either the Catholic or Protestant organization Implies that U.S. assistance has been sufficient. They point out that thousands of Biafrans continue to die dally, that projected figures indicate a half-million could starve In December and they wish the donations would double or triple. But everyone seems to agree the American response has been massive. "After all," says a priest who has been to Biafra, "that nation's a long way from here. Most people In the United States never even heard of It until thlssummer." This summer, people began hearing of Biafra through newspaper and television accounts. One story, quoting a Catholic missionary, told of children catching flies and scraping the ground for worms to eat. Another, the pitiable account of an 11 -year-old girl, fully aware she was dying of starvation and crying uncontrollably in a hospital bed until the end came. Since then, American donations have accounted for more than 450 mercy flights Into the Biafran war zone each flight containing more than 10 tons of everything from protein concentrate to wool blankets. if HK'WJ'.Ufl. nor the flights show signs of letup. As one letter of contribution has summed It up: "I don't have a lot, but the kids In Biafra have nothing. Here's $3 and a prayer."
