r 40 THE PALM BEACH POST TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1997 s Stones get satisfaction and then some on 'Bridges' tour The Stones rock Florida First Florida appearance: May 6, 1965 in Clearwater. First (and last) Palm Beach County appearance: The Palm Beach International Music & Art Festival, Nov. 30, 1969. A mini-Woodstock with numerous acts, it was supposed to be the final official concert of their tour. Unfortunately, they played one more gig on Dec. 6 Altamont. First American tour opener in Florida: June 10, 1978 in Lakeland. The tickets were printed as "The Great Southeast Stoned Out Wrestling Champions." First live pay-per-view concert in Florida: Nov. 25, 1994, Voodoo Lounge tour in Miami. Whoopi Goldberg sang on Jumpin' Jack Flash. It was their second longest concert ever 27 songs. First choice of lodgings in South Florida: Palm Beach. The Stones may play in Miami, but they usually stay in Palm Beach. For their last gig here in 1994, they camped at the Ritz-Cartton in Manalapan. They also held a press conference for their South American tour at the Four Seasons Hotel. The band ranks fifth on Forbes Top 40 list of highest paid entertainers. ROLLING STONES From ID said, 'It's going too well!' I said, "Just shut up. Don't say another thing!' And in a way, it's carried on like that. Mick was in great form from the word go." " As if to validate the good vibes, the Stones recorded a show recently in Madison, Wis., and played it back later. "We wanted to hear what the audience was hearing, instead of what we were hearing," Richards says. "The whole band was on the floor (in the hotel) listening and sort of gloating. I love to see a band gloat, because that means everything is going well." The Stones are gloating because they finally feel they've conquered the stadium environment. Their prior Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge tours were mega-spectacles, but Bridges goes evert further with an enhanced, crystal-clearvideo screen and a $3 million sound system that blows away anything that's been used in stadiums before. "It is expensive," Richards says of the sound system. "But nothing's too good for our customers. Yeah, baby, we give you the best," he adds with a laugh. ".The show also boasts a small, intimate "B stage," connected by a -ramp to the main, end-zone stage. Asked if it was adapted from U2's B stage, Richards admits that Jagger went to see U2 and maybe "nicked a few ideas." Regardless, it's working well. L ."It feels better and better out there every night," says Richards. "And I think we may start doing four or five songs out there instead of three. It's drifting that way anyway. And when you're out there, you could be in a club. And that's always been our aim." , 'In a club-like gesture, the Stones are varying their song lists by three or four tunes per night. As years go by: The Stones Quiz Answers to the quiz on Page ID: tric" and the Beatles' movie Help was released. C. Richards has been arrested six times. D. Baseball legend Lou Gehrig. E. All of those acts opened for the Stones. Also opening for them was Jay and the Americans, The Chiffons, Bobby Vee and the Rivieras. F. 1. Watts; 2. Jagger; 3. Richards. Jagger, at 54, is one year older than trash show talk host Springer. Marshall, the whiny director-actress, is 55, one year older than bad boy Richards. Ex-Stone bassist Wyman, who is 61 (!), is one year older than Albright. Branson singer Orlando, at 53, is three years older than Wood. B. All of those events happened in July 1965. In the same month, Bob Dylan was also booed off the Newport Folk Festival stage for going "elec THE ROLLING STONES. Many other songs are esoteric and perhaps difficult to penetrate for most Westerners, but there's a healing soulfulness even if the sound mix is sometimes uneven. "I call it 'marrow music' It's beyond the bone," says Richards of the chanters, some of whom he's known and played with for 25 years. "It's an amazing mixture of music and I hear they're playing it in Jamaica on the radio. I hear the Wingless Angels are all striding around ... and gloating. "So I've got two gloating bands right now," he concludes happily. "Yup, a two-band gloat." Since Chicago, some additions have been Sister Morphine ("That's becoming a rather hairy one," says Richards), Crazy Mama, the Vietnam-era Gimme Shelter, and, surprise, the bubble- tends to the Bridges album, which received some modern polish from outside producers such as the Dust Brothers, but still retains a distinctive Stones crunch. "You can't say we're resting on our laurels," he notes. "We had never made a record before by using different (producers). I think Mick and I came to an unspoken agreement, maybe almost spoken, that let's utilize the differences in what we're doing, rather than coming to a compromise in the middle. Because that's what usually happens. You try and bend what Mick wants to do, and myself. This time, we thought let's just let it sprout the other way and see what happens. And, of course, that way, there's a lot of chances being taken." Richards has had a very musical year, starting with a track he did with former Elvis Presley side-men Scotty Moore and D.J. Fon-tana for their superb All the King's Men album. "When I was a kid ot 14 or 15, I scoured every Scotty Moore lick there was," he says in praise. Richards also just coordinated and played on a Rastafarian chant album by the Wingless Angels, a group of Jamaican nyabinghi drummers and singers whom he recorded at his vacation home in Jamaica. In the latest stop on the information highway, the band has made that possible. Call up the official Stones Web site (www. therollingstones.com) and go to the "vote" section. There, you'll get to pick from 23 selections, including Like a Rolling Stone, I Go Wild, Time Is On My Side and Love Is Strong, and see how your fellow fans are casting their ballots. The band plays the top vote-getter on each tour date. And the big winner so far? Under My Thumb has taken the honor in most cities, although when we last checked Just My Imagination was the leader for the band's performance tonight at the Pontiac Silverdome. "I don't have time to sit crouching over a screen all day," he says. "It ain't my style. But I have people that do. And they let me know if there's anything of interest on there." Another surprise is that the Stones are opening with Satisfaction, an all-time hit usually played as the set peaks. "That's why we did it as a surprise," he says. "Songs do weird things. They grow as you play them over the years. After all, I wrote Satisfaction one day and two days later we were cutting it. The thing is just barely out of the womb and then you play it for like 30 years. You realize that was the baby you put on record and it's still growing every time you play it. As simple as they appear to be, there's so many things that you learn about them. You say, 'Ah, I wish had put this or that on the original.'
