The Amerks lost 6-2 to the IceCaps at Mile One Centre on Saturday. Rookie forward Michael McCarron had his first career hat trickto help the IceCaps sweep the two-game series with t he Amerks (2-2). Roche ster lost 5-2 on Friday. M organ Ellis opened s coring in the first second minute when he fired abullet in the upper left corner past Andrey Makarov, who made 30 saves in his season debut in goal for Rochester. Less than two minutes later, McCarron scored off a rebound inside the post, putting Rochester at a 2-0 deficit three minutes in. Phil Varone and Jerry D ’Amigo scored for the Amerks. Varone scored his first goal of the season when he found Nick Baptiste’s rebound in front of the net to make it a2-1game in the second. Rochester coach Randy Cunneyworth recog- nized the turning point came in the third period, when St. John’s scored f our goals, with two on p ower plays. “ We need to be smarter with the puck in regards to placing it where we want it” Cunneyworth“ said. “We’re going to focus on managing the puck offensively.” ICECAPS 6, AMERKS 2 Amerks swept in 2-game series STAFF REPOR T St.John’s 6,Amerks 2 Rochester011—2 St.John’s204—6 First Period: 1,St.John's,Ellis 1(Holloway, Hudon),1:07.2,St.John's,McCarron 1(Carr, Thomas),2:45. KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Matt Kenseth walked quietly into the interview at Kansas Speedway, sat b ehind a microphone, and was asked to reflect on last year’s Chase for t he Sprint Cup championship. “I can hardly remember last week,” he replied, “much less last year.” Probably a good thing. J ust about everything t hat could go wrong for Kenseth did a week ago at Charlotte. He ultimately f inished so far off the lead that his Chase hopes took a major hit, and now h e arrives at Kansas in desperate need of a victory that would guaran- t ee him one of the eight spots in the “eliminator” r ound. If not this week, then next at Talladega — an e ven bigger wildcard track. “For me it’s really no d ifferent. We try to show up and try to do the best w e can every week,” Kenseth said. “Same this week. Obviously a win moves you on, but I don’t t hink this is a must-win. Just try to do the best we can and be ready on Sunday.” K enseth has every reason to be optimistic this weekend. S tart with the fact that he’s won twice at Kansas, has sat on the pole twice more, and put together six top-five finishes at the speedy mile-and-a- half tri-oval. He’s led m ore than 500 laps in all, a nd has been in the top 10 in nine of his past 10 starts. T hen, consider that his five victories this season are the most of any d river, and that his Joe Gibbs Racing stable won 13 times in all, more than a ny other team. Things are more dire f or Dale Earnhardt Jr. He slammed into the first-turn wall just past t he halfway point at Charlotte, then said NAS- CAR failed to clean up oil t hat Justin Allgaier’s car sprayed on the track.
