2&-Palm Beach Post, Monday, Nov. 11, 1968 Ease On Travel Bormann Hiding In Brazil, Agent Says VIENNA (API Communist Romania announced a measure Saturday which appeared to ease travel of Romanians abroad. A decree issued by the state council and the cabinet and published by the official news agency Agerpres said: "Romanian citizens have the right to obtain passports by which they may cross the state frontier in order to travel or to reside abroad." and the notorious Dr. Josef "In many ways,"he says "my work has simply prolonged my stay in a concentration camp, spiritually at least. In dealing all day long with atrocities, one never gets far bevond the barbed wire." time the biological solution will have intervened. Many of the Nazi criminals will eiiher be dead or too old to imprison," he explains. Wiesenthal won't be sorry to close down his documentation center. f TELEPHONE NOW! Stangl is said to have been responsible for 700,000 deaths at Treblinka. "I trailed Stangl for years," Wiesenthal recalls. "He was actually a prisoner of the Americans for awhile, but escaped a few days before I discovered his whereabouts. "He went to Rome, then to Damascus, always working as a garage mechanic. Finally, I managed to locate him in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where he was working in an automobile factory." Wiesenthal thinks his work will be ended by 1975. "By that VIENNA - (NEA) Martin Bormann did not commit suicide on May 1, 1945, as the Russians fought on the outskirts of Berlin, but Is alive today and hiding in Brazil, or so says Simon Wiesenthal, the man who brought Adolf Eich-mann to justice. Bormann was reported to have swallowed cyanide shortly after Hitler killed himself in his Berlin bunker, but Wiesenthal, the world's No. 1 authority on Nazi war criminals, says this is nonsense. "Bormann spends his time flitting between Chile, Paraguay and Brazil," Wiesenthal claims. "He has plenty of money, and he travels with an armed bodyguard, but his health is poor. He suffers from high blood pressure." In fairness, it should be pointed out that other experts who have studied the case are just as convinced that Bormann is dead. But Wiesenthal says he has reliable reports that Bormann, who was Hitler's personal deputy, was seen in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil, near the Paraguay border, earlier this year. "It would take a skilled commando group to smoke him out," the sleuth says. "Unfortunately, I have neither the money nor the resources for such an operation myself." The West German government believes so strongly that Bormann is alive that it has posted a $25,000 reward for his arrest, and instructed its legal department to apply for his extradition, should he be found In South America. Bormann is not the only Nazi big-shot hiding out in Lai-in America, according to Wiesenthal. Others include Heinrich Muller, the Gestapo chief; Richard Glucks, onetime inspector general of ail Nazi concentration camps; SUES tNO SERVICC IT PROFCSSiONAUV TRAINED PERS0NNEI K WEATIIERr- v V v T0NY ( MnwlS i - 7 S 6:25 PM kT If TONIGHT MJWj! "Mengele is living under the personal protection of the president of Paraguay," Wiesenthal claims. "We have photographs of him taken in the town of Independencia. He's a millionaire, his family having once owned the biggest agricultural machinery plant in Europe. He is one of the few Nazi bigwigs who is still living it up." Wiesenthal, a Polish Jew, weighed only 90 pounds when American soldiers freed him from the Mauthausen concentration camp in lH4r). Most of his family were dead, having perished in Hitler's gas ovens. Once freed, Wiesenthal felt that he had a mission to accomplish. It was to avenge not only his family but his dead friends in Lemberg, Poland, where he had worked as an architect. Only 500 of the 150,-000 Jews of Lemberg survived the gas ovens. "I felt that somehow I must make amends to them lor the privilege of having remained alive," says Weisenthal. He set up a one-man documentation center on Nazi war crimes, operating for two years on a shoestring budget of $50 a month contributed by a sympathizer in Geneva. Significantly, Wiesenthal opened his office in Linz, Austria, two blocks from where Frau Eiehmann lived until 1954 when she joined her husband in hiding in Argentina. A cat-and-mouse game culminated in 1961 when Israeli agents, in one of the most daring coups of modern times kidnaped Eiehmann and took him to Israel to be tried and executed. Eiehmann is the best-known, but by no means the only, Nazi big fish whom Wiesenthal has netted. In the recent Stuttgart trial of 37 Nazi guards accused of having committed atrocities at Lemberg, Wiesenthal was the chief prosecution witness, having personally tracked down nine of the defendents.
